Where Ficus umbellata grows naturally

Ficus umbellata is native from western tropical Africa across to southwestern Ethiopia and south to Angola, where it grows in wet tropical habitats.

It can begin life above ground on another tree, then send roots down and establish its own trunk. Mature plants grow into independent trees.

• Stem support: A young top-heavy stem can be tied loosely to a stake while it strengthens. Check the tie as the stem thickens so it stays loose.

• Water: Water when the surface is dry and the pot feels lighter while some moisture remains deeper in the mix. Soak the potting mix and let all excess water drain away.

• Leaf space: Leave room around the long leaf stalks so the broad leaves can spread freely, and wipe settled dust away with a soft damp cloth when needed.
• Temperature and humidity: Aim for about 18–27 °C for Ficus umbellata. Moderate, stable room humidity supports broad new leaves as they open.
• Feeding: Feed while a fresh leaf is opening or another is actively forming. Pause during periods when no new leaf is developing.
• Repotting: Repot once roots fill the container or emerge strongly through the drainage holes. Choose a stable pot that balances the tall leafy stem.
• Propagation: Propagate from healthy stem cuttings, or use air layering on an established stem.

Common trouble signs in Ficus umbellata

• Whole leaves hang limp while the pot feels very light: The potting mix has dried too far. Water the mix thoroughly, let it drain and return to a steadier watering rhythm.
• The broad leaf edges become dry and crisp: The potting mix may be drying too far between waterings, or the surrounding air may be very dry. Rewet the potting mix evenly and raise humidity around the leaves.
• Dark soft patches appear while the potting mix remains wet: Root rot may be developing. Check the roots, remove every soft brown section back to firm healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the rotten tissue and repot in fresh free-draining mix.
• Fine pale speckles and webbing spread across the broad leaves: Spider mites are likely. Isolate the plant, clean the upper and lower leaf surfaces where practical, then use a product labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamentals at the repeat interval shown on the label.

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Umbellata means arranged like an umbel.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Ficus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1059; Joseph Pitton de Tournefort had proposed the name.
