‘Robusta’ has been grown as a houseplant since Victorian times and remains one of the best-known green rubber plants. The details of its earliest selection and introduction have not been traced.

In the wild, Ficus elastica grows in warm, humid parts of Asia, from Nepal and south-western China through Southeast Asia.

Growing Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ as an indoor tree

• Space and light: Give ‘Robusta’ bright filtered light and enough room for its large leaves and future branches. Turn the container gradually so the newest growth receives light from more than one side.
• Large-leaf care: Support each leaf while wiping both surfaces, and check the leaf joints and undersides for pests. Use a stable pot that can support the plant as the upper growth becomes heavier.
• Watering a substantial root system: Feel below the surface and lift the container. Water when the area around the roots is partly dry and the pot feels lighter, then soak the mix evenly and let it drain.
• Pot and roots: A loose mix containing bark and perlite or pumice supports drainage. Repot one size larger when roots fill the container, the mix breaks down, drainage slows or the plant becomes top-heavy.
• Keeping height manageable: Shorten a tall stem just above a node—the point where a leaf joins the stem. A stem cutting needs a healthy node; air layering can root the upper section before it is removed.
• Warmth, feeding and safety: Keep ‘Robusta’ around 18–26 °C with normal household humidity, clear of cold draughts and direct heater air. Feed while new leaves and branches are developing, following the rate on the label, and pause when growth slows. Wear gloves during pruning and keep the milky sap away from skin and eyes. The plant is harmful if swallowed.

Solving common problems in Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’

• Several lower leaves turn yellow and the pot feels very light: One old lower leaf can age naturally. When several are affected and the potting mix is dry, water thoroughly and let the excess drain. Review the watering interval if the same pattern returns.
• Several lower leaves turn yellow while the potting mix stays wet: Stop watering and inspect the roots. When the roots are firm and the mix is loose, return the plant to the pot and let it dry further; replace mix that has become dense or stale. Trim all soft, dark root tissue back to firm root with a clean tool, discard the damaged roots and waterlogged mix, clean the container and replant in fresh, loose potting mix.
• Healthy-looking leaves fall soon after a move even though the mix is neither very dry nor wet: A colder room, cold draughts or a large drop in light can trigger leaf loss. Keep the plant in one warm place with bright filtered light and avoid moving it repeatedly while it adjusts.
• A pale dry patch appears on the window-facing side: Sudden strong sun is the likely cause. Filter the hottest light and introduce direct sun gradually. The existing patch will remain, but later leaves should develop without new marks.
• Speckles, webbing, silver scars, sticky leaves or pest clusters appear: Speckles and webbing suggest spider mites; silver scars and black specks point to thrips; sticky residue with brown bumps or white clusters suggests scale insects or mealybugs. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use an indoor product labelled for it. Follow the safety instructions and repeat the treatment only as directed.

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Elastica refers to the latex once investigated as a rubber source.
