The selection of Ficus elastica ‘Belize’

Johannes Baars found ‘Belize’ in March 1999 among ‘Tineke’ plants in a greenhouse in Uitgeest, the Netherlands. One plant had developed a natural change throughout its foliage and stems, producing the red-purple, green and white pattern seen today.

How to grow Ficus elastica ‘Belize’ indoors

• Light for coloured leaves: Give ‘Belize’ bright filtered light so new growth remains sturdy and well patterned. Introduce gentle direct sun gradually, and keep folded or newly opened leaves away from cold glass, rough walls and busy walkways.
• Keeping the upright form: Leave the growing tip in place when you want one tall main stem. Removing it from an established stem can encourage side shoots. Turn the pot gradually if the newest growth begins leaning towards one window.
• Watering: Check below the surface and lift the pot. Water when the area around the roots is partly dry and the container feels clearly lighter, then soak the mix evenly and empty any water left beneath the pot.
• Roots and repotting: Use a loose mix containing bark and perlite or pumice. Move the plant into a pot one size larger when healthy roots fill the container, drainage slows, the plant dries unusually fast or the upright stems become unstable.
• Room conditions and feeding: Keep the plant at about 18–26 °C with normal household humidity. Protect it from cold draughts and direct heater airflow. Feed at the rate on the label while new foliage is forming, then stop when growth pauses.
• Propagation and safe handling: Stem cuttings need a node—the point where a leaf joins the stem. Air layering can root part of a tall woody stem before it is cut off. Wear gloves because the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, and keep the plant away from children and pets because it is harmful if eaten.

When Ficus elastica ‘Belize’ shows stress

• A cream or pink area develops a dry tan patch: Check where the mark sits. A patch facing a bright window usually comes from sudden strong sun, while damage at an exact contact point suggests rubbing. Filter the hottest light or move the leaf away from the object causing the damage. The marked tissue will remain.
• Crisp edges appear on several leaves: Lift the pot and check the mix around the roots. Water thoroughly when the pot is very light and the mix is dry. If moisture is normal, move the plant away from hot heater air. After frequent feeding, run plenty of water through the potting mix once and let it drain fully to remove excess fertiliser.
• Several new leaves are smaller and the stem looks more open: ‘Belize’ naturally keeps visible gaps between its leaves, so look for a clear change across several new leaves. When the roots still have room and the potting mix dries at its usual pace, move the plant into brighter filtered light. Roots filling the pot or emerging through the drainage holes are a cue to repot one size larger. If water now moves slowly through old, dense potting mix, replace it. A return to larger leaves and steadier spacing shows that conditions have improved.
• Several leaves lose firmness while the potting mix stays wet: Stop watering and inspect the roots. When the roots are firm and the mix is still loose, return the plant to its pot and allow it to dry further. Replace old mix that stays wet or smells stale. Use a clean blade to trim every soft, dark part back to firm root; discard the trimmings and soaked mix, clean the container and replant in fresh potting mix that drains freely.
• Silver scars, webbing, sticky residue or pest clusters appear: Silver marks and black specks on new leaves suggest thrips; fine pale speckles with webbing suggest spider mites; sticky residue with brown bumps or white clusters points to scale insects or mealybugs. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use an indoor product whose label names it. Follow all safety directions and repeat the treatment only as instructed.

Ficus elastica ‘Belize’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs, and avoid contact with its milky sap.
• The latex contains ficin and psoralens, which can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.
• Exposure may cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, stomach pain or a skin rash. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or persist.

Why is it called Ficus elastica?

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Elastica refers to the latex once investigated as a rubber source.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Ficus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1059; Joseph Pitton de Tournefort had proposed the name.
