‘Abidjan’ is an established cultivar grown for its unusually dark foliage, although the details of its first selection have not been traced.

It belongs to Ficus elastica, a tropical Asian tree whose natural range extends from Nepal and south-western China into Southeast Asia.

• Light and leaf checks: Put ‘Abidjan’ in bright filtered light. Turn it gradually when new growth leans towards the window, and wipe both leaf surfaces so dust and early pest signs do not go unnoticed on the dark foliage.

• Fine pale dots, webbing, silver marks, sticky leaves or pest clusters appear: Dots and webbing beneath the leaves point to spider mites; silver marks with black specks suggest thrips; sticky residue with brown bumps or white clusters suggests scale insects or mealybugs. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use an indoor-plant product labelled for it. Follow all safety directions and repeat the application only as instructed.
