Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’

Origin of Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’

‘Abidjan’ is an established cultivar, although the details of its first selection are still uncertain.

It belongs to Ficus elastica, a tropical Asian tree whose natural range extends from Nepal and south-western China into Southeast Asia.

Keeping Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ healthy indoors

• Light and leaf checks: Put ‘Abidjan’ in bright filtered light. Turn it gradually when new growth leans towards the window, and wipe both leaf surfaces so dust and early pest signs do not go unnoticed on the dark foliage.
• When to water: Feel the potting mix below the surface and lift the pot. Water once the area around the roots is partly dry and the container feels clearly lighter, then let all excess water drain.
• Warmth and feeding: A steady 18–26 °C and normal household humidity suit the plant. Keep it away from cold glass, draughts and hot air from heaters. Feed at the rate on the label while leaves or shoots are forming, and pause when growth slows.
• Potting and stability: Use a loose mix with bark and perlite or pumice in a pot with drainage holes. Repot one size larger when roots fill the pot, drainage slows, the mix has broken down or the plant becomes unsteady.
• Pruning and propagation: Shorten a stem just above a node—the point where a leaf joins the stem. New shoots may grow below the cut. Stem cuttings need a healthy node; air layering lets an older woody stem form roots before it is removed.
• Sap safety: Wear gloves when cutting and keep the milky sap away from skin and eyes. The plant is harmful if swallowed, so place it beyond the reach of children and pets.

Problems to watch for in Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’

• Healthy-looking leaves fall after a move and the pot feels very light: The roots are probably too dry. Water thoroughly, let the excess drain and keep the plant in one warm position with bright filtered light while it settles.
• Healthy-looking leaves fall after a move while the potting mix stays wet: Stop watering and inspect the roots. When the roots are firm and the mix is loose and fresh, return the plant to its pot and let it dry further. Replace old mix that smells stale or drains slowly. Cut away every soft, dark part with a clean tool until the remaining root is firm; discard the removed roots and soggy mix, clean the pot and repot in fresh, loose potting mix.
• Soft dark patches appear after a cold night: Cold damage is likely when the marks follow a temperature drop or match the place where a leaf touched a window. Move the foliage away from cold glass and draughts, then keep the room steadily warm. The damaged areas will remain.
• A dry tan patch forms on the window-facing side: Sudden strong sun is the likely cause. Filter the hottest light and introduce brighter conditions gradually. The existing mark will not disappear, but healthy later leaves show that the problem has stopped.
• Fine pale dots, webbing, silver marks, sticky leaves or pest clusters appear: Dots and webbing beneath the leaves point to spider mites; silver marks with black specks suggest thrips; sticky residue with brown bumps or white clusters suggests scale insects or mealybugs. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and use an indoor-plant product labelled for it. Follow all safety directions and repeat the application only as instructed.

Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs, and avoid contact with its milky sap.
• The latex contains ficin and psoralens, which can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.
• Exposure may cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, stomach pain or a skin rash. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or persist.

What does the name Ficus elastica mean?

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Elastica refers to the latex once investigated as a rubber source.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Ficus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1059; Joseph Pitton de Tournefort had proposed the name.

Jens Wilken Hornemann first described Ficus elastica in 1819 in Supplementum Horti Botanici Hafniensis, page 7; William Roxburgh had proposed the name.
