Ficus benjamina ‘Exotica’

Cultivated form and natural range of Ficus benjamina ‘Exotica’

‘Exotica’ is a long-established Ficus benjamina cultivar that has been grown in European horticulture for decades. It has also been used in breeding later Ficus varieties.

The species itself is native across tropical and subtropical Asia and northern Australia, mainly in wet tropical habitats.

Growing Ficus benjamina ‘Exotica’ indoors

• Give it a settled, bright position: Bright indirect or filtered daylight suits ‘Exotica’. After a move, keep it in one suitable place for a few weeks before repotting, major pruning or regular feeding.
• Keep the room warm and even: Aim for temperatures above 13 °C. Cold draughts and concentrated heater air can stress the foliage. Moderate to high humidity suits the plant. A humidifier can help in persistently dry rooms.
• Water thoroughly, then wait: Once the surface has started to dry and the pot feels lighter, water the potting mix evenly and let the excess drain. As growth slows, expect the mix to stay moist for longer.
• When to repot: Plant ‘Exotica’ in a peat-free houseplant mix containing loam and fine bark. Move it to a slightly larger pot when roots fill the container, emerge through the drainage holes or make the mix dry unusually quickly. Refreshing the top layer of mix can be enough for a large plant staying in the same pot.
• Feeding, support and pruning: Use a foliage fertiliser according to the product label while the plant is making new leaves and shoots, and pause regular feeding when new growth stops. It can be grown without added support. Prune an overlong stem just above a leaf.
• Taking cuttings and safety: For propagation, choose a firm, slightly woody stem and give the cutting gentle warmth from below until it roots. Wear gloves when making cuts because the sap can irritate skin. Keep the plant away from children and pets because Ficus benjamina is harmful if eaten.

Problems and solutions for Ficus benjamina ‘Exotica’

• Leaf tips or edges dry and shrivel: Check whether the potting mix has become too dry, the room air is very dry, strong direct sun is reaching the leaves or fertiliser salts have built up in the mix. Correct the condition that best matches what you find. If feeding has been frequent, run plenty of water through the mix and let it drain completely.
• Green leaves start dropping: A recent move, low light, cold air, wet roots or excess fertiliser can all contribute. Keep ‘Exotica’ in one bright, stable position and correct the most likely cause you find.
• New leaves show silvery scars, or older leaves develop fine pale spots with webbing: Silvery scarring and distorted new growth point towards thrips; fine pale spots with webbing point towards spider mites. Isolate the plant, identify which pest is present and use an indoor-plant treatment labelled for it. Repeat the treatment as directed on the label.
• Yellowing increases while the mix around the roots stays wet: Prolonged excess moisture can damage the roots and lead to rot. Inspect them if the pot stays wet for too long. Cut soft, dark rotten roots back to firm healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the damaged material and repot in fresh, freely draining mix.

Ficus benjamina ‘Exotica’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs, and avoid contact with its milky sap.
• The latex contains ficin and psoralens, which can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.
• Exposure may cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, stomach pain or a skin rash. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or persist.

What does Ficus benjamina mean, and who first published it?

Classical Latin ficus means fig. The epithet benjamina preserves a historical plant name used for this fig.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Ficus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1059; Joseph Pitton de Tournefort had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described Ficus benjamina in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 129.
