Where the plant comes from

Ficus benjamina ranges through tropical and subtropical Asia to northern Australia. It is a wet-tropical forest tree. In southern China it occurs in moist mixed forest at about 400 to 800 m, and young plants may begin growing on other trees before producing aerial roots.

In the wild it becomes a large tree with a spreading crown, pale bark and slender hanging branchlets. Its small figs feed animals that disperse the seeds. ‘Danielle’ is a long-established dark-green foliage selection cultivated at a much smaller scale than the species reaches in tropical forest.

Growing a container tree or shrub

Light: Ficus benjamina ‘Danielle’ adjusts its leaves to the direction and strength of the available light, so a move can trigger leaf loss. Keep the plant in bright indirect light with a stable orientation and temperature.

Temperature and humidity: Keep Ficus benjamina ‘Danielle’ in stable mild to warm conditions; abrupt cold draughts or a sharp move between rooms can trigger leaf drop. Moderate humidity with gentle air movement supports the foliage.

Roots and substrate: During active growth, wait until the upper mix has dried before watering thoroughly and draining the pot. A loose houseplant mix and a pot that fits the roots prevent the centre from remaining wet long after the surface has dried.

Feeding and propagation: Use a moderate-strength fertiliser from spring until late summer. Young stems can be rooted as cuttings, while air layering is suitable for a larger mature branch.

‘Danielle’ commonly drops green leaves after a sudden move, rotation, loss of light or temperature shock. If the fallen leaves still look healthy and the soil is neither saturated nor completely dry, keep the plant in one stable position. Allow the remaining foliage time to adjust instead of moving it repeatedly.

Yellow or spotted leaves falling above wet soil raise concern for excess moisture and root damage. Crisp leaves combined with a light, dry pot point to drought. Check the moisture below the surface before changing the watering rhythm, because the top can dry while the centre remains wet.

Cold window contact and draughts create local dark or dead patches. Long sparse shoots indicate insufficient light. Move the plant away from chilling surfaces and increase usable light gradually, keeping its orientation as consistent as possible.

Inspect scarred or twisted new leaves closely. Silvery streaks with tiny dark specks indicate thrips, while fine pale speckles and webbing indicate spider mites. Fixed bumps, white wax or honeydew point to scale or mealybugs. Keep an infested ficus apart from other plants and repeat treatment until new growth remains clean.
