Fargesia 'Rufa'

Cultivar origin and botanical identity

Fargesia ‘Rufa’ came into cultivation from a bamboo collected in Gansu, China, at roughly 1,800 to 2,500 m elevation. Shanghai Botanical Garden sent the plant to Europe in 1995 under the collection code Gansu 95-1.

It was first grown under other botanical names before becoming established as Fargesia ‘Rufa’. None of the proposed wild species identities proved certain, so the cultivar is now best treated at genus level.

Container care for clumping bamboo

Feeding, leaf care and propagation: Feed when new canes begin extending in spring, followed by a lighter early-summer application only while growth remains active. Remove dead or crowded canes at ground level. Cutting the top fixes that cane at its new height, while selective removal keeps the natural fountain shape. Divide only a healthy clump in spring; every division needs a good root system and several living canes.

Root care, watering and temperature: Keep the soil around Fargesia ‘Rufa’ evenly moist but able to drain freely. Water deeply before the leaves remain tightly rolled and never allow a container to dry all the way through. For long-term pot culture, a large, deep container gives the roots a better buffer against rapid drying and temperature changes.

Light, temperature and watering: Bright shade or partial sun suits this outdoor bamboo. Shelter is especially useful where afternoon heat or dry wind repeatedly browns the leaf tips. Increase sun exposure gradually after delivery.

Temperature, watering and root care: Plants in open ground tolerate winter cold better than roots held in a pot. Shelter or insulate the container during prolonged freezes without blocking drainage. Cold alone can roll the leaves, so check the soil before assuming the bamboo needs more water.

Problems and how to solve them

Rolled leaves on Fargesia ‘Rufa’ reduce water loss during heat, wind, bright winter sun or root-zone drought. If the root ball is light and dry, water deeply. If it is already wet, more water can worsen damaged or airless roots. Cold alone can also roll the leaves, so check the soil and recent weather before reacting.

Brown margins usually reflect repeated drying, desiccating wind, heat or accumulated salts. Restore even moisture and shelter the clump from the strongest exposure. Flush a container thoroughly if fertiliser residue is suspected. Pale stretched foliage points to too little light, while sharply bleached areas appearing after a move indicate scorch. Rust is supported by powdery pustules, not plain winter browning.

Slugs and snails chew ragged holes in tender emerging shoots. Protect the spring growth and inspect after dark. Mites create fine pale stippling, while aphids gather on soft new tissue. Wash small colonies away and repeat a suitable treatment if they return.

Grass-like spikelets are flowers, not ordinary leafy side branches. Flowering canes can weaken, but a few flowers do not prove that the entire clump will die. Remove exhausted canes only after checking that healthy leafy shoots and living roots remain. Brown leaves can be replaced, but a dead cane will not revive.
