Fargesia 'Rufa' is a compact clump-forming bamboo with fine evergreen leaves, slender green culms and a soft arching shape. Young canes rise fairly upright from the base, then bend outward as they mature, giving the plant a rounded fountain outline instead of a rigid upright shape. Fresh shoots can show warm reddish or rusty sheath tones before the new culms leaf out fully.
This is an outdoor bamboo for large containers, sheltered patios, balconies, terraces and planted privacy screens. It grows from a clumping base, so it is far easier to manage than running bamboo, but the root mass still widens over time. A generous pot, steady moisture and protection from drying wind matter more than frequent pruning.
Fargesia 'Rufa' is a cultivated clumping bamboo linked to Gansu, China. In pots and planted screens, it grows as a hardy outdoor bamboo that needs bright outdoor light, steady moisture and shelter from drying wind.
In containers, the dense root mass needs more space than a small decorative pot can give. Regular watering, enough soil volume and a sheltered outdoor position keep the leaves from rolling and let the culms arch naturally.
Cut bamboo canes can splinter, and dry cane edges can scratch skin. Use clean sharp secateurs and gloves when thinning older culms. Collect cut cane pieces after pruning and keep loose trimmings away from pets or children who chew plant material.
Fargesia honours Paul Guillaume Farges, a French missionary and plant collector associated with western China. The name 'Rufa' refers to reddish or rusty tones, matching the warm colour often seen on fresh bamboo sheaths.
In outdoor containers or informal screens, Fargesia 'Rufa' forms a compact evergreen clump with fine leaves, arching green culms and warm sheath colour on fresh growth.
