Cryptanthus zonatus

Natural range and habitat of Cryptanthus zonatus

Cryptanthus zonatus is native to northeastern Brazil, where it grows on shaded sandy ground in coastal Atlantic-forest vegetation.

Caring for Cryptanthus zonatus

Keep temperatures around 18–28 °C and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C. Keep humidity around 60–80% and allow gentle air movement around the foliage. Give Cryptanthus zonatus bright indirect light and protect the banded leaves from strong midday sun. Keep the plant away from cold draughts, radiators and heaters. A bright bathroom can provide humid air when it also receives enough light.

Use an organic potting mix that retains some moisture and drains freely; fine bark with peat-free multipurpose compost is one option. Water as the surface begins to dry while the mix around the roots remains moist. Let excess water drain, empty the saucer or outer pot and keep the rosette centres free of standing water. If growth slows, the mix will take longer to reach the same watering point.

During active growth, feed sparingly with a balanced liquid feed at half strength about once a month. Pause feeding when growth stops.

Offsets can remain attached and gradually form a clump. When the rosettes crowd the container, move the clump into a slightly larger pot at the same planting depth.

For a separate plant, wait until an offset is roughly one-third the size of the parent and comes away readily with a slight twist and gentle pull.

Pot the offset in a small container with drainage holes and freely draining mix, keeping any existing roots intact. For a rootless offset, set the short stem in a small depression and firm the mix around it. Keep the lowest leaf base at or above the surface. If the offset rocks, stake it lightly until the roots hold it in place.

Keep the new plant warm in bright indirect light while it establishes. Water as the surface begins to dry while moisture remains deeper in the mix.

Help with Cryptanthus zonatus problems

• The pale cross-bands develop bleached or brown patches after strong sun: The leaves may be scorched. Shield the rosette from intense direct light and move it into a position with filtered light.
• Brown tips appear, or the plant wilts in persistently wet mix: For brown tips, check both the potting mix and the surrounding air. Rewet a mix that has dried too far and let it drain. If the mix is waterlogged, drain it and empty standing water, then wait until the surface begins to dry before watering again while the mix around the roots remains moist. Dry moving air can also contribute when the roots are moist; move the plant away from heating or cooling vents and use a humidifier if needed. If the plant remains wilted while the mix is still wet, inspect the roots. Soft brown roots may be rotting. When enough firm healthy roots remain, cut away the decayed tissue with clean tools, discard it and repot in fresh organic mix that holds moisture while draining freely. Resume watering as the surface begins to dry while the mix around the roots remains moist.
• White cottony clusters appear around the leaf bases: Inspect the bases and undersides for mealybugs and isolate the plant while you confirm the infestation. Remove visible insects by hand when numbers are small. If further treatment is needed, use a product labelled for mealybugs on indoor plants. Test a small area and wait at least 48 hours to check for leaf injury before wider use, follow the label for any repeat treatments and keep the plant isolated until the infestation is controlled.

Cryptanthus zonatus is non-toxic to cats and dogs

• This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs.
• Its effects on people are unclear, so keep it away from young children who may chew it.
• Eating a large amount can still cause an upset stomach. Seek medical or veterinary advice if symptoms continue.

When was Cryptanthus zonatus first published, and what does it mean?

Cryptanthus combines Greek kryptos, meaning hidden, with anthos, meaning flower. Zonatus means banded, belted or marked in zones, describing the strong cross-bands on the leaves.

Christoph Friedrich Otto and Albert Gottfried Dietrich established the genus Cryptanthus in 1836 in Allgemeine Gartenzeitung, volume 4, page 298.

Charles Lemaire first described it as Tillandsia zonata in 1846 in Hortus Vanhoutteanus, volume 2, page 36. Roberto de Visiani later placed it in Cryptanthus as Cryptanthus zonatus in 1852 in Atti del Reale Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, series 3, volume 1, page 168.
