Natural range and background of Cryptanthus zonatus

Cryptanthus zonatus is native to northeastern Brazil and grows in warm, wet tropical habitats. It grows close to the forest floor on soil and rocky surfaces.

Wild plants show natural differences in the width and intensity of their silver bands, so individual rosettes can vary in pattern.

How to grow Cryptanthus zonatus

• Light: Give it bright filtered light to maintain a compact rosette and clear leaf pattern.
• Temperature: Keep it warm and away from cold draughts and cold window glass.
• Humidity: Keep moderate humidity around the rosette. In very dry rooms, move it away from radiators and use a humidifier.
• Potting mix: Use an airy terrestrial bromeliad mix that holds some moisture and drains freely.
• Watering: Water when the top layer begins to dry, then let excess water drain from the pot.
• Feeding: Feed lightly while the plant is producing new growth.
• Repotting: Repot when the offset cluster becomes crowded or the potting mix has broken down.
• Propagation: Separate rooted offsets, or grow new plants from seed.

Common problems with Cryptanthus zonatus

• The centre or lower leaf bases soften: The potting mix has stayed too wet. Remove damaged tissue back to firm healthy tissue with a clean tool, inspect the roots, and remove rotten roots. Discard all removed rotten material before repotting in fresh, freely draining mix.
• Leaf tips turn crisp and brown: The potting mix has dried too far, humidity is very low, or salts have built up. Water thoroughly and flush the mix with clean water. If the air is very dry, move the plant away from direct heat or use a humidifier.
• The leaf pattern becomes less distinct and the rosette becomes more open: Light is too low. Increase bright filtered light gradually.
• Brown scale insects or cottony clusters appear: Scale or mealybugs may be present. Isolate the plant, remove visible pests, and follow the directions on a treatment labelled for ornamental plants.

When was Cryptanthus zonatus first published, and what does it mean?

Cryptanthus combines Greek kryptos, meaning hidden, with anthos, meaning flower. Zonatus means banded, belted or marked in zones, describing the strong cross-bands on the leaves.

Christoph Friedrich Otto and Albert Gottfried Dietrich established the genus Cryptanthus in 1836 in Allgemeine Gartenzeitung, volume 4, page 298.

Charles Lemaire first described it as Tillandsia zonata in 1846 in Hortus Vanhoutteanus, volume 2, page 36. Roberto de Visiani later placed it in Cryptanthus as Cryptanthus zonatus in 1852 in Atti del Reale Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, series 3, volume 1, page 168.
