Cryptanthus bivittatus ‘Super Pink’

‘Super Pink’ is an ornamental selection of Cryptanthus bivittatus, developed for intensely pink foliage with paler longitudinal markings. The intense colour is a cultivated trait, while the small, flattened rosette is typical of the species.

Wild C. bivittatus occurs in northeastern Brazil within the Atlantic Forest region. This species is terrestrial, rooting in the ground among leaf litter and low forest vegetation. Warm, humid air, frequent rain and the broken light beneath shrubs and trees surround its shallow rosette, while decaying leaves continually renew the organic layer around the roots.

Light for strong pink rosette colour

Set ‘Super Pink’ in excellent filtered daylight at an east or north-east window, or screened from direct midday sun at a south or west window. Daylight should reach the entire flat rosette, with only mild morning sun falling directly on it after acclimation. Intense sun through glass leaves pale dry bands, whereas low light produces long, soft, green growth. Its large proportion of pink tissue needs ample daylight and scorches quickly under strong exposure. Dim conditions produce looser growth and weaker contrast without removing the genetic colour. Variegation is fixed in the plant and should never be forced with sun stress.

Watering a broad, low pink rosette

Keep ‘Super Pink’ lightly and evenly moist without watering on a schedule. When the top 1–2 cm has dried, soak the shallow root ball and let it drain fully. This earth star is terrestrial, so any water caught in the rosette must drain and dry. The pale rosette may use water more slowly under moderate light, so confirm that the shallow root zone has dried at the surface before adding water. Prolonged drought causes curled margins, while constant wetness leaves the short stem and roots without enough air. A warm, bright position dries much faster than a cool, deep container.

Choose a loose mix for ‘Super Pink’ that holds a little moisture, combining fine bark with coir or quality potting substrate and perlite or pumice. The shallow roots need moisture spread evenly through the pot, but the rosette base should not sit in packed, wet material. A broad modest pot is safer than a deep one. Use low-mineral water where possible and rinse away accumulated fertiliser salts.

Protecting saturated pink leaves from chill

A realistic indoor range for ‘Super Pink’ is 18–28 °C, ideally near 20–26 °C during active growth. Temperatures below about 15 °C become risky when the substrate is wet. Cold windows can mark the low leaves, while heating and cooling outlets dry exposed edges. Newly developing offsets benefit from consistent warmth.

Normal indoor humidity is adequate for basic growth of ‘Super Pink’; around 50–70% can reduce crisping on the thin, pale pink leaves. Combine higher humidity with open placement so the low centre does not stay damp. Do not seal the rosette into still air. Misting is not needed and cannot replace thorough watering of the roots.

Feeding new pink growth sparingly

Use a bromeliad or balanced foliage fertiliser sparingly for ‘Super Pink’. One-eighth to one-quarter strength with 4–6 weeks between applications is enough while new leaves or pups develop. Use less in enriched mix and stop when weaker light or cooler temperatures slow growth and drying. Avoid pouring fertiliser into the central leaves, and rinse the shallow pot before salts accumulate.

Widening the pot as offsets gather

Move ‘Super Pink’ only after roots or pups have filled the container or the substrate no longer drains properly. The next pot should be broad and only 2–3 cm wider, with no more depth than the roots need. Preserve the fine root ball, replant the short stem at the same height and divide offsets during active growth only when they have roots of their own.

Managing the mother rosette and new pups

Protect the soft-looking but toothed outer leaves from repeated contact and avoid stacking other foliage over them. Preserve healthy green sections, which power the paler crown, and separate pups only when their own roots are established. Keep the pups that replace a spent mother rosette and wait until the old centre is mostly dry before removing it. Support ‘Super Pink’ at the base whenever the pot is moved, since the toothed leaves snag easily. Clean with a soft brush or brief gentle shower and let the crown dry; do not rub or polish the patterned leaves.

The intense pink surface develops pale tan patches

Sun scorch is especially conspicuous on ‘Super Pink’: affected areas are dry, often on the most exposed side, and stop spreading once the plant is moved. Shift it to bright filtered light gradually. Soft, translucent or enlarging patches do not fit scorch and need isolation; remove affected tissue if the damage continues to spread.

New leaves are less pink than the old rosette

Fresh leaves may colour as they harden, and low light can reduce intensity. Check several new leaves under improved filtered light before changing anything else. Avoid overfeeding to force pink colour; the appearance of one greener leaf is not a health problem by itself.

Fine tips dry while the centre remains firm

The thin star points react to an unevenly dry root ball, excess dissolved salts or hot air. Check moisture beneath the low rosette, water evenly when needed and flush residue from the mix. Trimming the points is cosmetic. A soft centre is a separate, more urgent problem.

The whole rosette loosens at soil level

Cryptanthus is terrestrial, so cold waterlogged mix can rot the short stem and roots. Lift the star and inspect immediately; retain firm roots and offsets, and remove brown mushy tissue. If the entire base is soft, individual healthy rooted offsets offer a better recovery route than trying to re-anchor the parent.

Cryptanthus bivittatus ‘Super Pink’ is classified as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Occasional nibbling is not expected to cause poisoning, although a large amount of foliage may upset the stomach. Discourage regular chewing and contact a veterinarian if vomiting or discomfort persists.

Cryptanthus means hidden flower, referring to the small blooms nestled deep in the rosette. The epithet bivittatus means marked with two bands. William Hooker first published the species as Billbergia bivittata in 1861. Regel’s accepted combination, Cryptanthus bivittatus, appeared in 1865; the cited seed-list supplement is labelled 1864.
