Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Pink Star' is a striking terrestrial bromeliad with a compact, star-shaped rosette and bold pink variegation. Each stiff, slightly wavy leaf is marked with vivid magenta-pink stripes running alongside creamy white and green zones, forming a low, symmetrical mound that sits close to the soil. Despite its vibrant colour, it’s surprisingly easy to care for, requiring no special treatment beyond bright light and well-draining substrate. This miniature showstopper is perfect for small pots, tropical terrariums, or adding a pop of colour to shaded plant arrangements.
Cryptanthus bivittatus is native to eastern Brazil, where it grows terrestrially on the rainforest floor in warm, shaded environments with consistent moisture and filtered light. Unlike most bromeliads, it grows in soil, not on trees. The cultivar 'Pink Star' was developed for its enhanced pink pigmentation, which becomes more intense under bright conditions. It prefers conditions similar to its native environment – humidity, warmth, and a well-draining but moisture-retentive substrate.
Cryptanthus 'Pink Star' is non-toxic and safe to grow around pets and children.
This bromeliad shines in small containers or grouped displays where its colour stands out. Cryptanthus 'Pink Star' thrives in bright, indirect light and consistent warmth. It does particularly well in glass terrariums or under grow lights, where humidity and light can be easily controlled. Mimic its native forest floor environment with a lightly moist, airy substrate and minimal disturbance to encourage healthy pup production.
Cryptanthus means “hidden flower” in Greek – “kryptos” (hidden) and “anthos” (flower) – referring to its low, near-invisible blooms nestled deep in the rosette. The species name bivittatus means “two-striped,” describing the leaf markings. The cultivar 'Pink Star' is named for its striking colour and symmetrical rosette shape.
Small in size but big on colour – Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Pink Star' adds vibrant charm and structure to any space. Order now and enjoy tropical foliage that fits anywhere.
