The pointed oval leaves of Codiaeum variegatum 'Mrs. Iceton' change colour as they mature. Young leaves open in warm yellow tones, then older foliage develops pink and red colouring. The plant often shows several colour stages at once, with fresh leaves near the shoot tips and deeper tones on older growth.
This cultivar grows as an upright woody shrub, with leaves of different ages on the same stems. It keeps leaves more reliably with even warmth and root moisture, especially after moving. Bright filtered light helps new leaves develop normally as they mature.

Native from Malesia to the southwest Pacific, Codiaeum variegatum is an evergreen shrub or small tree from the Euphorbiaceae family. Its cultivated forms are grown for varied leaf colours, markings and blade shapes.
On 'Mrs. Iceton', new leaves and older leaves often differ strongly in colour. New shoots produce the newest yellow-toned foliage, while older leaves deepen towards pink and red. As the plant ages, the stems become woodier, so one plant can show yellow, pink and red leaves at the same time.

- Light: Set it in very bright filtered light. Gentle direct sun is suitable after acclimation, but intense sun through glass can scorch the leaves.
- Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of substrate feel lightly dry. Keep the root ball evenly moist while the plant is actively growing, and water a little less when light and growth slow.
- Substrate: Use a humus-rich, well-drained mix with mineral drainage. The roots need light moisture without sitting in stagnant wet substrate.
- Temperature: Keep above 15 °C, ideally around 18–28 °C. Temperature swings are a common reason for leaf drop; avoid cold glass, doors and draughts.
- Humidity: Broad leaves are less likely to brown at the edges when the air is not too dry. Keep the plant away from strong dry heat.
- Feeding: Use a diluted foliage-plant fertiliser while the plant is producing leaves. Reduce feeding when growth slows.
- Cleaning: Wipe the broad leaves gently when they collect dust. This also helps you check the undersides and veins for pests.
- Pruning: Trim long stems when new shoots are growing well. Wear gloves and protect nearby surfaces from sap.
- Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container. Use a pot only slightly larger, as oversized pots can hold too much moisture around the roots.
- Propagation: Stem cuttings or air layering keep the same leaf shape and colour pattern.

- Leaf drop after purchase or relocation: Check for draughts, temperature swings and moisture changes. Keep it warm and avoid moving it again while new growth returns.

- Soft yellowing leaves: Inspect drainage and root condition. Cold, saturated substrate can damage roots quickly.
