Clusia rosea ‘Princess’

Origin of Clusia rosea ‘Princess’

Clusia rosea occurs naturally from Florida through the Caribbean and tropical America into Venezuela and Ecuador. It grows as a tropical shrub or tree and can begin life on another tree before developing roots that reach the ground. ‘Princess’ was selected for compact, densely branched growth.

Pruning and indoor care for Clusia rosea 'Princess'

• Light: Bright filtered light keeps the growth dense. Add a little direct sun gradually.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm, stable conditions around 18–28 °C suit it; 15 °C is the lower limit for prolonged exposure. Maintain roughly 50–60% humidity during routine growth. Pair this with light air movement around the leaves.
• Water: Wait until the upper layer of the mix has dried, then water evenly until it runs through. Empty any standing water afterwards.
• Potting mix: Use a loose peat-free mix with bark plus perlite or grit so it holds some moisture while still draining freely.
• Feeding: Give a balanced liquid houseplant feed as new growth develops, at a moderate dose for potted foliage plants.
• Repotting: Inspect the roots when they fill the container. Clusia grows well with a relatively close root run, so choose only a slightly larger pot when more root space is clearly needed. Refresh slow-draining mix separately, and improve stability with a heavier container if the plant becomes top-heavy.
• Pruning: When shaping the plant, make the cut directly over a healthy leaf pair. New shoots can form below the cut and make the crown fuller.

Clusia rosea 'Princess': leaf colour, growth and pests

• Yellowing leaves with wet mix: Poor drainage or constant wetness is stressing the roots. Let the upper layer dry further before watering and empty any standing water.
• Brown, crisp margins: Dry roots, hot window glass or strong dry airflow can cause crisp edges. Check the watering first, then move the plant away from hot glass or a direct vent if needed.
• New stems stretching between leaves: The current light is too weak to keep the growth dense. Move the plant towards brighter filtered light over several days.
• Fine pale speckling, cottony patches or fixed bumps: Pale speckling can come from spider mites, while cottony or fixed marks suggest mealybugs or scale insects. Inspect the leaves and stems and wipe off small colonies. If they keep spreading, apply a houseplant treatment according to its label.

Clusia rosea ‘Princess’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs, and avoid contact with its sap.
• The sap can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.
• Exposure may cause burning mouth pain, vomiting, stomach pain, or skin and eye irritation. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop.

Where does the name Clusia rosea come from?

Clusia honours the Flemish botanist Charles de l’Écluse. Rosea means rosy or pink and refers to the flowers.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Clusia in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 510; Charles Plumier had proposed the name.

Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin first described Clusia rosea in 1760 in Enumeratio Systematica Plantarum, page 34.
