Pomelo’s wet-tropical Asian roots

Pomelo is native from Assam through Indochina and is one of the major citrus trees of the wet Asian tropics. It has been cultivated across Southeast Asia for a very long time.

Generations of selection produced many local forms, which is why plants sold simply as Pomelo can differ noticeably in fruit size, rind thickness, segment texture and flesh colour.

Growing Pomelo as a container tree

• Light and warmth: Give Pomelo the strongest indoor light available and keep it warm while it is actively growing or filling fruit. If room temperatures drop, keep the tree in a bright, frost-free position.
• Humidity: Keep indoor humidity moderate and place the broad foliage away from direct heating vents, especially when the air is dry.
• Watering: Check a large pot in more than one place. Water when the surface is dry and the centre has become lightly moist. Broad leaves and large fruit can increase water use quickly in warm conditions.
• Pot, mix and repotting: Use a durable loam-based citrus mix with coarse bark or grit. Once roots are crowded, move the tree into a slightly larger, stable pot and keep the trunk base and graft above the mix. Gradual increases help the centre dry evenly.
• Nutrition and crop control: Feed with a complete citrus fertiliser while shoots and fruit are developing, following the label. Shorten selected upright shoots once they have firmed up, and support or thin fruit when its weight begins to pull branches down.

Pomelo root, leaf and crop stress

• Many small fruit drop shortly after flowering: A fruiting Pomelo can shed part of its crop, but unusually heavy loss can follow drought, saturated roots or a sudden environmental change. Check the mix below the surface and recent conditions before increasing water or fertiliser.
• New growth is yellow between green veins: Alkaline potting mix, salt buildup or unhealthy roots can make it harder for the roots to absorb trace nutrients. Correct drainage and root problems first, then compare the pattern with the yellow-leaf guide before changing the feed.
• Leaves yellow and fall while the pot remains wet: Inspect the fine roots for soft brown tissue and a sour smell. Using clean, disinfected scissors or pruners, trim away soft or rotten roots back to firm, healthy tissue and discard the removed material. Replace compacted mix with a fresh, open mix that drains freely when necessary; the root-rot guide covers the recovery steps.
• Sticky residue, bumps or fine stippling spreads through the crown: Scale insects or spider mites can build up on the large leaves and stems. Isolate Pomelo and identify the pest before treating. Treat only after identification, using a product labelled for that pest and the plant and repeating it solely as the label directs.

Keep Citrus maxima (Pomelo) away from pets

• The fruit flesh is edible, while leaves, peel and other plant material can irritate cats and dogs.
• These parts contain essential oils and psoralens that may cause vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness or skin irritation.
• Contact a veterinarian if a pet chews the plant or develops symptoms. Seek medical advice if a person becomes unwell after exposure.

Citrus maxima: name and meaning

Citrus is the classical Latin name used for citron and related citrus plants. The Latin epithet maxima means largest, fitting a species that produces some of the largest citrus fruits.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Citrus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 782.

Johannes Burman first described it as Aurantium maximum in 1755 in Auctuarium, sign. Z, 1, verso. Elmer Drew Merrill later placed it in Citrus as Citrus maxima in 1917 in Interpretatio Herbarii Amboinensis, page 296.
