‘Variegata’ is a horticultural variegated selection of lemon, preserved through propagation so its cream-and-green leaf pattern continues from plant to plant.

It belongs to the long horticultural history of cultivated lemon, which moved from Asia through the Middle East into Mediterranean growing regions.

Growing Citrus × limon ‘Variegata’

• Light: Give ‘Variegata’ very bright light with some direct sun. Increase exposure gradually after a dim period.
• Watering: Base watering on the plant’s actual drying speed. Water when the surface is dry, the pot feels lighter and the centre is lightly moist, then let excess water drain fully.
• Pot and roots: Use an airy citrus mix in a pot only slightly larger than the root ball. Move up one pot size when the roots fill the container.
• Feeding: Feed conservatively while the plant is actively growing, flowering or developing fruit, and follow the label. Increase feeding only when light is strong, the mix is drying normally and the roots are healthy.
• Green shoots: Check new growth for fully green shoots. If one begins to take over the patterned crown, remove it at its point of origin; otherwise prune lightly and retain flowering tips.
• Temperature and humidity: When light levels fall and growth slows, keep ‘Variegata’ bright, cool and frost-free. Keep the pale foliage away from icy glass and hot, dry air from heaters, and maintain moderate humidity around the crown.

Variegated Lemon foliage and root problems

• Cream sections turn dry and brown: Pale tissue contains less chlorophyll and is more vulnerable to sudden hot sun and dry air. Move the plant slightly back from scorching glass, acclimate it gradually to stronger light, then keep root moisture steady and let excess water drain fully.
• Yellowing spreads beyond the normal cream pattern: General yellowing across green tissue can indicate root stress, too little nutrition or salt buildup around the roots. • The plant wilts although the potting mix is still wet: Fine roots may be declining because the mix is staying wet with too little air around them. Inspect for soft dark roots and a sour smell. Using clean, disinfected tools, cut away soft or rotten tissue back to firm, healthy tissue and discard the removed material. Repot into an open mix if necessary. • Sticky residue, cottony clusters or bumps appear: Mealybugs and scale can hide at leaf joints, along stems and around the graft. Isolate ‘Variegata’, remove visible insects and inspect new growth carefully. If treatment is required, select a product labelled for the identified pest and the plant, then repeat it only according to the label.

Citrus × limon: name and meaning

Citrus is the classical Latin name used for citron and related citrus plants. The epithet limon preserves an old word for lemon that entered European languages through Arabic and Persian.
