Citrus × aurantiifolia (Green Lime)

Where the green lime began

Citrus × aurantiifolia is an ancient hybrid formed and preserved through cultivation, with no standalone wild population. Its early history is associated with the eastern Himalayan region, and its ancestry combines citron with a papeda-type citrus. Genetic research identifies that second parent more narrowly as Citrus micrantha. Walter T. Swingle published the accepted Citrus combination in 1913, based on an earlier name published by Christmann in 1777.

Both ancestral lines come from warm, humid parts of southern and Southeast Asia. This places green lime among the most tropical cultivated citrus, shaped by sustained warmth, seasonal moisture and little prolonged winter cold. Centuries of cultivation carried it through South Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean before it became closely associated with the Caribbean, far beyond the region where its parent lineages first developed.

Indoor care for Citrus × aurantiifolia (Green Lime)

Light

Green Lime needs intense light to remain compact and productive. Set it directly against a south- or south-west-facing window, where the crown receives six or more hours of sun, or add a strong grow light above the canopy. It tolerates direct sun well after gradual acclimation. Move an indoor-grown tree into outdoor sun in stages because tender leaves burn easily after a sudden change. Too little light produces thin, stretched shoots, sparse foliage and few flowers. Excessive heat against glass can bleach leaves and mark exposed fruit.

Watering

Allow the surface of the potting mix to partially dry, then check below the surface and water only when the centre is no longer wet. Drench slowly until the entire ball is wet, then let it drain completely. Fine lime roots and a leafy, fruiting crown dislike a long dry interval; drought can curl leaves and drop flowers or small fruit. Constant saturation is more damaging and can strip the roots of oxygen. Warm sun, a clay pot, many shoots and fruiting accelerate water use. Low winter light, cooler air, a roomy pot and reduced growth slow it.

Substrate and roots

This acid lime has a fine, relatively shallow feeder-root system that performs best in an open, evenly textured medium. Use citrus potting mix or a loam-based container substrate amended with fine bark and pumice or perlite. The finished mix should hold useful moisture yet drain as soon as watering stops. Avoid compressed peat, heavy garden soil and an oversized pot, all of which can leave the inner root zone airless. Keep the trunk base dry at the surface and rinse the mix occasionally to remove fertiliser or hard-water salts.

Temperature

Green Lime needs warm conditions and should be kept above 10 °C, preferably warmer while it is actively growing. Protect it from cold panes, winter ventilation, air-conditioning outlets and sudden transfers between a hot room and a cool balcony. Heater air can desiccate the thin leaves and flowers.

Humidity and airflow

Average household humidity can work, although this tropical lime grows more cleanly at moderate humidity when temperatures are high. Very dry heated air can crisp new leaf edges and shorten flower life. Good circulation is useful around its dense twiggy crown, especially after leaf cleaning. Give the canopy space and avoid a still, crowded corner. Misting is unnecessary and provides only a brief humidity change.

Fertilising

Use a complete citrus fertiliser that supplies nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and trace elements such as iron, manganese and zinc. Apply it according to the product label while the plant is actively making shoots, flowers or fruit; use the lower end of the labelled rate for a small plant, a recently repotted root ball or a specimen growing slowly. Reduce or pause feeding when cool or low-light conditions slow water use. Never fertilise a dry or waterlogged root ball, and flush the pot periodically with plain water to limit salt buildup.

Repotting

Repot once the root ball is densely netted, water races around a compact core, drainage slows, or the tree needs water again unusually soon. Move into a pot only slightly larger than the root ball because a large volume of unused substrate stays wet around this warm-growing lime. Work at the start of renewed growth, slide the root ball out intact and disturb the fine roots as little as possible. Tease apart only severe circling at the outside. Return the trunk and any graft union to their former level.

Pruning, handling and leaf care

Green Lime is naturally twiggy and often thorny. Let young shoots harden before shortening them, then cut selected long stems above an outward-facing leaf to keep light inside the crown. Retain enough foliage to support fruit. If the plant is grafted, remove vigorous growth from below the union. A stake is useful only if the trunk or a fruit-laden branch cannot hold itself; ties should stay loose. Turn the pot in small increments. Clean leaves with a gentle shower or soft damp cloth, working around the thorns and tender shoot tips without bending them.

Reading stress signs on Green Lime

• Dark, limp leaves after a cold night: Green Lime is highly sensitive to near-freezing conditions. Move the plant away from frost and cold draughts, water sparingly while the chilled plant is using little moisture and wait for the extent of twig damage to become clear before pruning.
• Wilting while the substrate is still wet: Roots may no longer be taking up water. Inspect for soft brown roots or a sour smell, remove dead tissue and repot in clean, loose substrate as described in the root-rot treatment guide.
• Fine pale dots, bronzing or delicate webbing: Spider mites can build quickly on warm indoor citrus. Keep Green Lime apart from other plants, confirm moving specks with a white-paper tap test and rinse both leaf surfaces. • Green fruit gradually turns yellow: A yellowing rind usually marks ripening. Check further when fruit softens unevenly, develops spreading lesions or drops alongside widespread yellowing, wilting or root problems.

Pet Safety

Citrus × aurantiifolia (Green Lime) is toxic to cats and dogs. Its leaves, stems and peel contain essential oils and psoralens; chewing these parts can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy, while contact with the oils may irritate the skin. The fruit flesh is a lower concern than the peel, but its acidity can still upset the stomach. Keep the plant and fallen fruit out of reach, and contact a veterinarian if a pet chews the foliage or peel or develops symptoms.

Why aurantiifolia means orange-leaved

The epithet aurantiifolia means orange-leaved. It belongs to the Key or Mexican lime, a direct hybrid between Citrus micrantha and citron, Citrus medica; Green Lime is another common name for this citrus.

Gottlieb Friedrich Christmann used the earlier form of the name, and Walter Tennyson Swingle published the combination Citrus × aurantiifolia in 1913.
