Green Lime’s tropical Asian background

Green Lime has a long history as a cultivated citrus. Its early history is associated with tropical Asia, with ancestral lines linked to the eastern Himalayan region and Southeast Asia.

Growers carried the lime west through South Asia and the Middle East and eventually into the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Its cultivation history is closely tied to warm tropical and subtropical regions.

Growing Green Lime indoors

• Light and warmth: Put Green Lime in the brightest practical indoor position, with direct sun across the crown. It prefers warm conditions and should stay frost-free, including when light levels are lower. Introduce stronger outdoor sun gradually after indoor growth.
• Humidity: Indoor heating can dry the air quickly. Keep humidity moderate around the foliage and place the plant away from direct heater airflow.
• Watering: Let the upper mix dry and the deeper mix become only lightly moist before watering thoroughly. Fine roots grow best when moisture is steady and air can still move through the mix, so use pot weight and current growth to judge timing.
• Mix and repotting: Choose a loose citrus mix that drains freely while retaining some moisture. When the roots fill the pot or drainage becomes uneven, refresh the mix and move up one pot size.
• Feeding and shape: Feed with a complete citrus fertiliser while the plant is growing, flowering or developing fruit. Shorten selected shoots once new growth has matured, keep leafy tips for future flowering and remove shoots that emerge below the graft if present.

Green Lime problems and first checks

• Leaves wilt although the pot is still wet: Fine roots may be failing in cold, compacted or saturated potting mix. Check for soft brown roots and a sour smell. Using clean, disinfected tools, cut away soft or rotten tissue back to firm, healthy tissue and discard the removed material. • Fresh leaves become pale between greener veins: Root stress, alkaline potting mix or accumulated salts can make it harder for the roots to take up iron and other trace nutrients. Check drainage and root condition before adding more fertiliser, water thoroughly with plain water if salts have built up and compare the pattern with the yellow-leaf guide.
• Leaf tips and edges turn dry and brown: A severe dry spell, concentrated fertiliser or very hot dry air can damage the thin leaf margins. Check moisture below the surface and deeper in the pot, pause feeding if salts have built up and keep the crown away from direct heater air.
• Fine pale speckles spread across the leaves: Inspect the undersides for spider mites, especially in warm dry rooms. Isolate Green Lime, rinse accessible foliage and confirm the pest before treating. If a treatment is required, use a product labelled for the pest and plant, and repeat only as directed on the label.

About the name Citrus × aurantiifolia

Citrus is the classical Latin name used for citron and related citrus plants. The epithet aurantiifolia means orange-leaved.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Citrus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 782.

Gottlieb Friedrich Christmann first described it as Limonia × aurantiifolia in 1777 in Vollständiges Pflanzensystem, volume 1, page 618. Walter Tennyson Swingle later placed it in Citrus as Citrus × aurantiifolia in 1913 in Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, volume 3, page 465.
