Gritty substrate for dry-growing pots
Cacti & Succulent Soil Mix gives dry-growing plants a substrate that releases water more readily than standard houseplant soil.
How to set it up
Use it for common cacti, succulents and other plants that need a lighter, grittier root zone. Always match watering to pot size, light and root condition.
Good to know
Terracotta pots, strong light and warm rooms dry the mix faster. Cover pots and cooler rooms slow drying down.
Use notes
This mix is built around structure first. Use it as a complete potting mix, or blend it into a base soil to adjust airflow and drying speed.
Watering should match the pot size and root mass. Check moisture at depth and adjust your routine after the first few cycles.
What it’s made from
- Moisten dry components before potting so the mix settles evenly.
- Choose pot size for the root ball, not for the top growth.
- Top-dress with the same mix to reduce surface compaction.
Small details
Store it dry and sealed. If components arrive very dry, pre-moisten before potting so water distributes evenly through the mix.
- Sift or crush oversized pieces for very small pots.
- If the mix dries too fast in your home, blend in a little more moisture-retentive component.
- If it stays wet too long, increase airflow or choose a smaller pot.
