Biophytum sensitivum

A touch-responsive herb from tropical Asian ground layers

Biophytum sensitivum is a small tropical herb native across parts of South and Southeast Asia. Its umbrella-like crown is made of finely divided leaves whose leaflets fold in response to touch, darkness and other changes in their surroundings.

In nature it occurs in warm lowland vegetation, including moist grassland, open forest floor and lightly disturbed ground. Rainfall supports its short stems and delicate roots, while neighbouring plants create a mixture of open light and partial shelter. Its daily leaf movements are part of life in this changeable ground-level environment.

Watering

Keep the small root ball of Biophytum sensitivum lightly and evenly moist. Its fine shallow roots tolerate little prolonged dryness, which quickly causes the whole rosette to droop and shed leaflets.

Light

Place Biophytum sensitivum close to an east or north-east window, or a short distance from a brighter south or west window. It needs strong daylight for a compact upright rosette but not prolonged hot sun through glass.

Temperature

Maintain Biophytum sensitivum at steady warmth, with protection from chilling temperatures. A heater stream can dry the shallow root ball before the leaves fully show stress, so stable room warmth is preferable to a hot local current.

Humidity and airflow

Average household humidity can be adequate if watering is precise, although moderate to high humidity noticeably reduces dry leaflet edges and helps new leaves expand. Higher humidity must be paired with gentle airflow around the low crown and damp surface.

Fertilising

Apply a complete foliage fertiliser at a very low dose while Biophytum sensitivum is making leaves or flowers. A warm, well-lit plant may continue growing and need dilute nutrients beyond summer; stop when growth and drying slow.

Repotting

Repot Biophytum sensitivum when roots fill the drainage area, the tiny pot dries within a day or the mix becomes dense and difficult to wet evenly. Older individuals may naturally be short-lived even when the roots remain healthy.

Folding after touch or at night is normal movement for Biophytum sensitivum. Concern begins when the leaflets stay closed through the light period and the stem or substrate also shows stress. Check warmth and root-zone moisture, then leave the plant undisturbed so repeated handling does not confuse the diagnosis.

Feathery leaves crisp from the tips inward

The fine leaflets have little water reserve and can dry rapidly if the small root ball becomes dry. Rehydrate the substrate evenly and protect the plant from hot sun and heater airflow. If the mix is already wet, inspect the stem base instead of adding more water.

The miniature crown becomes tall and sparse

Long gaps below a small crown indicate weak light, while a sudden bare stem can also follow stress leaf-drop. Increase bright filtered light without exposing the delicate leaflets to direct midday sun. Keep moisture even while new leaves form and avoid heavy feeding on a weakened root system.

The plant flowers, sets seed and then declines

Biophytum sensitivum is naturally annual, so a mature plant may senesce after reproduction even under good care. Collect ripe seed before the capsules shed it and raise a new generation. A young plant collapsing with a soft base is different and should be treated as rot rather than normal ageing.

The thin stem darkens at soil level

A narrowed, water-soaked or soft base is an urgent damping-off or root-rot sign. Remove the failing plant and wet surrounding debris, improve drainage and air movement, and protect any healthy seedlings from the same saturated area. Once the single stem has rotted through, that plant cannot regrow from below.
