Begonia wiformis is a described Vietnamese species that circulated earlier under the provisional number Begonia U577.

This rhizomatous species spreads through stolon-like shoots and comes from monsoonal Vietnam. Its exact habitat within Vietnam remains unknown.

Light

Keep Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. Brief cool morning sun is acceptable after acclimation, but the broad blades and exposed rhizome need protection from hot direct rays. With too little usable light, petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. The plant develops the silver-green striping on the small leaves naturally. Useful light keeps new growth compact and the colour clear, but direct sun cannot intensify an inherited pattern. More sun is not better once growth is compact and colour is clear.

Watering

Check Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) below the surface and water after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Soak the substrate evenly, let it drain fully and never leave the inner pot standing in water. Waterlogged substrate around the shallow roots can weaken the living rhizome without an immediate warning from the foliage. The thick rhizome holds a little water, but repeated complete dry-outs still kill the fine roots beneath it. Check the shallow root zone below the newest growth on wiformis as well as the exposed pot edge. Light, temperature, leaf area, pot size and pot material all change how quickly the mix dries.

Substrate and roots

Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) depends on a sideways-growing rhizome and a modest mat of delicate feeder roots. Aim for a small-particle Begonia mix that combines coir or peat-free substrate with fine bark and pumice. Packed fine compost stays airless beneath the rhizome, while bark used alone dries the small roots too unevenly. Use a shallow, broad drainage pot and keep the top of the rhizome at its present level. Keep the rhizome of wiformis uncovered and give its growing end open surface space.

Temperature

Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 15 °C. Winter ventilation should not blow across damp roots or soft new leaves. Hot dry airflow damages soft growth and makes the upper mix dry faster than the roots below.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia wiformis (formerly U577), increase humidity towards 50–70% only when correct root moisture still produces dry-edged new leaves. This small-leaved species grows more reliably at 60–80% humidity than in very dry heated rooms, with enough airflow to dry the crown after watering. Keep humid air moving gently so leaf bases and stem tissue can dry.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) a complete foliage fertiliser at about quarter strength every five to six weeks. A plant that is still unfolding leaves in winter still uses nutrients, while an inactive one does not. If leaf growth slows while salts collect at the pot rim, flush first and resume at a weaker concentration. The shallow roots of wiformis need regular dilute nutrition; a concentrated dose can burn them.

Repotting

Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) needs a new pot once the rhizome reaches the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, water moves unevenly or the substrate has compacted. A pot 2–3 cm wider is normally enough for the next stage of growth. Keep the rooted centre of the rhizome together and remove only loose old mix. A division needs roots and a live bud. Work while the plant is actively growing in stable warmth so new roots can resume quickly. Set wiformis so the growing rhizome has room to advance across the fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Allow the compact rhizome of Begonia wiformis to cross a shallow pot without staking the delicate petioles. A division must include its own roots, a live bud and at least one firm striped leaf. Turn the pot gradually over several weeks so fresh growth can adjust without twisting. The thin foliage of Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) creases easily. Rinse with lukewarm water or lift loose dust with a very soft brush. Rubbing can mark the blades. Cut fully spent leaves or flower stems cleanly at the base. Tearing can injure the crown.

Slightly cupped leaves look curled

A shallow cup is part of the normal velvety leaf shape. Several tightly distorted, hard or bronzed new leaves need a pest and root check. Inspect for mites and thrips and check the roots if no pest is present.

Short stolon-like shoots extend from the clump

Begonia wiformis can carry new growth beyond the original plant on short extensions from its dark burgundy rhizome. Keep firm outward growth in contact with the substrate. Pale extensions with progressively smaller leaves need brighter filtered light and a root check.

Brown marks on silver-green, green and maroon areas

The three-colour pattern remains dry and regular on healthy velvet leaves. A stationary dry mark may follow handling; an area that stays wet-looking, enlarges or develops grey growth should be removed.

Softness in a burgundy rhizome or short shoot

Dark colour alone is normal. A soft section, sour smell or several loosening petioles indicates decay. Cut back to clean firm tissue and save an unaffected rooted part before the damage reaches the main clump.

Managing Begonia wiformis (formerly U577) around household pets

Begonia wiformis (formerly U577), including its slightly cupped velvet blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the concentration is greatest in roots and related underground tissues. Long shoots carrying the leaves can extend into a pet’s reach. Secure the trailing growth and collect every cutting, rooted node and root fragment after propagation. Allow for the eventual shoot length when selecting the shelf or hanging position. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

From U577 to Begonia wiformis

The plant circulated as Begonia U577 after entering collections from Hieu Nguyen in 2009. That provisional number preserved the cultivated accession while its species identity was unresolved.

Begonia wiformis T.S.Hoang & C.W.Lin was formally published in 2023 and is now the accepted species name. The species is native to Vietnam.
