Begonia U062 reached Bob Cole in 1980 through Thailand from material associated with Kolkata, India. The route into cultivation is known, although the original wild locality and species identity remain unknown.

In cultivation it develops as an upright, fine-rooted densely branching Begonia with broad silver-spotted leaves. The U062 number continues to identify this cultivated plant while its botanical name and wild locality remain unresolved.

Growing Begonia U062 indoors

Light

For usable indoor light, stand Begonia U062 near a bright north or east window, or under a measured grow light in a ventilated cabinet where no direct sun reaches the leaves. Too much unfiltered light is visible when the enclosed leaves heat rapidly, bleach and develop dry translucent patches. If the room is too dim, growth stalls, petioles or stems reach weakly towards the light and each new leaf is smaller. The plant naturally carries the spiral form and metallic velvety surface. The details are inherited: a well-lit position supports clear new growth, whereas harsh sun only bleaches or scars it. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Lift the pot and test the mix. Water Begonia U062 when the surface is just beginning to dry while the small root zone remains evenly moist. Pour slowly enough that dry channels rewet, stopping only after water exits freely below. Do not let the small root zone dry throughout. These thin-leaved plants have little stored water for recovery. A sealed wet pot can damage the crown even while the enclosure humidity appears ideal. Check beneath any moss around U062. Enclosure humidity can keep the surface looking wetter than the roots are. A warm, well-lit plant in a close-fitting pot needs water sooner than one in cool, weak light.

Substrate and roots

When repotting Begonia U062, take care not to damage a small, fine and shallow root system adapted to steady moisture with abundant air. A practical potting medium is a fine, springy blend of small bark, chopped sphagnum or coir, fine peat-free substrate and pumice or perlite. Replace the mix when moss and fine organic material collapse and no longer admit air. A small, low drainage pot keeps the fine root zone easy to inspect and prevents a deep wet layer. Temperature

Maintain Begonia U062 at about 18–26 °C and avoid sustained exposure below 15 °C. The lower limit assumes active drainage. A saturated pot should be kept warmer. Keep it outside the direct stream of a radiator, fan heater or strong cooling vent.

Humidity and airflow

At home, dry room air can mark new velvety leaves. Keep it in humid but ventilated conditions, with enough spacing for the leaf surface and crown to dry normally. The velvety surface marks easily if droplets linger, so keep the plant clear of condensation and let cleaned leaves dry promptly. Use mild continuous air exchange and keep occasional strong blasts away from the foliage.

Fertilising

Use a complete foliage or orchid fertiliser at one-eighth to one-quarter strength every four to six weeks for Begonia U062 while it is producing new leaves or stems. Do not follow a rigid summer-versus-winter rule. Check how actively the plant is growing and how quickly the substrate dries. Strong feed cannot correct poor light and instead leaves damaging fertiliser salts in the shallow root zone. Keep U062 at the weaker dose. Its fine roots are easier to damage than a large open-pot root ball.

Repotting

Do not repot Begonia U062 by the calendar. Wait until fine roots occupy the shallow pot, the growing point reaches the rim, moisture becomes uneven or the substrate packs down. Select the next modest size, generally 1–2 cm wider. Lift the plant with its fine roots supported by the old mix and disturb only material that has broken down. Choose a warm, well-lit period of active growth, when disturbed roots can recover promptly. Keep U062 in a close-fitting pot so moisture remains easy to judge inside the enclosure.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Begonia U062 needs horizontal room across the substrate; staking is unnecessary. Keep the low growing point away from wet enclosure walls and divide only a rooted rhizome section. Rotation is useful for balance, but wait until soft foliage has expanded before changing its direction. Do not wipe the spiralled velvety metallic leaves of Begonia U062. Rubbing flattens the hairs and leaves marks. Remove dust with a soft dry brush or a gentle rinse followed by quick airflow. Remove a dead leaf with clean scissors, leaving healthy stem and growing points untouched.

Silver spots are joined by translucent marks

The normal spots are fixed and clear against the dark green heart-shaped leaf. A glassy halo, soft patch or expanding brown area is damage. Remove a leaf with an enlarging lesion and inspect the attached petiole.

Sparse or one-sided upright shrub

Flexible young stems become upright and branched with age. Turn the pot for even filtered light and shorten a firm overlong shoot above a node to encourage branching. If one stem continues to lose leaves, inspect its base.

Branches lean under the broad leaves

Loosely support a long firm branch before it creases, or shorten it above a node. Root the healthy pruned tip if needed. A bend that is dark, wet or soft should be cut back to solid tissue immediately.

Dark, soft tissue at a stem base or node

The stem is decaying. Cut a healthy tip above the affected area, making sure the inside is still firm, and root it separately. Remove the soft base and inspect adjacent branches and roots.

Preventing pets from chewing U062

U062, including its heart-shaped dark green blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the greatest concentration remains in the root system and other buried parts. Collect pruned stems and fallen leaves from below the upright canopy. Block access to the open root ball and every cane cutting during repotting. Choose a position where fallen leaves cannot land within a pet’s reach as the upright stems gain height. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
