Begonia ‘Two Face’

A registered trailing or climbing hybrid

Begonia ‘Two Face’ was raised by Leslie Woodriff in California in 1978 and registered in 1980. The cultivar arose from a Begonia incarnata hybrid crossed with a Rex Cultorum begonia, combining flexible scandent growth with cultivated foliage ancestry.

The cultivar is classified as trailing or scandent and grows through flexible climbing stems. Its flexible stems can trail from a pot or climb a slim support.

How to care for Begonia ‘Two Face’

Light

Place Begonia ‘Two Face’ near a clear east or north-east window, or 0.5–1 m back from stronger south or west glass with hot rays filtered. Direct sun tolerance is limited: pale dry patches and browned margins appear first on the most lightly coloured areas under a strong unacclimated beam. A position several metres from a window is too dark when petioles lengthen, the crown leans and the next leaves are smaller with less distinct colour. Use the newest mature leaf as the light check. The plant naturally displays the contrasting two-tone leaf pattern. This appearance is inherited: too little light weakens its definition, while stronger direct sun cannot add to it.

Watering

Water Begonia ‘Two Face’ when the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower mix remains lightly moist and never wet. Water from several points across the surface, continue to runoff and discard the collected water. Its fine roots and broad leaves tolerate a short surface dry phase. Repeated complete drying costs roots and leaves. Persistently wet substrate excludes oxygen from the shallow root zone and weakens the crown. For ‘Two Face’, judge moisture close to the active crown because an empty pot edge may dry sooner. Drying depends on light, temperature, airflow, how fully roots fill the pot and the container material.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Two Face’ has a shallow, easily damaged root system beneath a compact foliage crown. Choose a fine but open mix based on quality peat-free substrate or coir with small bark and pumice or perlite. Dense old compost stays airless, while a very chunky orchid mix leaves dry gaps around the fine roots. Choose a broad drainage pot close to the existing root spread and keep the stem bases at their old level. Set ‘Two Face’ at its existing depth. Covering the base to steady the crown creates a wet collar.

Temperature

Keep Begonia ‘Two Face’ at 18–26 °C, with 15 °C as a cautious indoor minimum. A cold sill can chill the shallow roots before the room thermometer shows a problem. Moderate day-to-night change is useful. Sharp temperature swings are not.

Humidity and airflow

Normal household humidity can be adequate, but a stable 50–70% gives more reliable leaf expansion and fewer crisp edges. Higher humidity helps ‘Two Face’ only when the crown remains open and leaf surfaces dry normally. A quiet fan outside an enclosure or normal room circulation is enough. The leaves should not flutter constantly.

Fertilising

Feed Begonia ‘Two Face’ with a complete houseplant fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks while it is actively making leaves or shoots. Continue lightly at any time of year if growth remains steady. Pause when cool conditions stop it. Alternate feeding with plain water so fertiliser residue does not build up around delicate feeder roots. Do not increase the dose to improve the contrasting two-tone leaves. Stronger feed cannot replace adequate light.

Repotting

Repot Begonia ‘Two Face’ when roots reach the drainage holes, the crown crowds the rim, water no longer spreads evenly or the mix has compacted. The next pot should be roughly 2–3 cm wider and retain the same basic shape. Move the root ball as one piece and remove only loose, exhausted mix. The fine roots recover slowly from bare-rooting. Choose a period when roots and leaves are growing, and avoid severe root work in a cold, wet room. Return the crown of ‘Two Face’ to its former depth and keep loose mix out of the leaf bases.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Begonia ‘Two Face’ is best managed as a balanced foliage crown without being tied to a support. Remove a badly placed leaf at its base and divide only a rooted section with its own active growing point. If one side faces the window, rotate by small steps only after the newest leaf has hardened. Support each mature leaf of Begonia ‘Two Face’ with one hand while cleaning it with a barely damp soft cloth. Never lift or carry the plant by a petiole. Prune dead tissue back to a healthy base, taking care not to nick the next bud or leaf.

Common concerns with Begonia ‘Two Face’

Silver-pink leaves hang limp

Feel the mix below the surface before watering. Water thoroughly when it is partly dry. If the flexible stems stay limp in wet mix, inspect the roots for rot or poor aeration.

Burgundy leaf backs appear very dark

Deep burgundy beneath the leaves is part of the normal two-sided colour. Healthy tissue remains firm and follows the whole reverse. Irregular areas that become translucent or soft, especially beneath a collapsing upper surface, need closer inspection.

Trailing stems become long and sparsely furnished

Begonia ‘Two Face’ naturally trails or climbs. Very wide gaps and progressively smaller leaves can indicate insufficient filtered light. Shorten a firm overlong stem above a node and root the healthy cutting to rebuild a fuller cascade.

One flexible stem turns dark and translucent

Follow the discolouration up the stem and cut where the tissue is firm and healthy. Root the healthy tip separately and discard soft or sour-smelling tissue. Check the shared root system if more than one stem begins to decline.

‘Two Face’ and curious cats or dogs

‘Two Face’, including its broad blades held at varied angles along flexible, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the root system holds more of the toxic principle than the visible shoots. Long shoots carrying the leaves can extend into a pet’s reach. Secure the trailing growth and collect every cutting, rooted node and root fragment after propagation. Allow for the eventual shoot length when selecting the shelf or hanging position. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

Two contrasting sides in the name

‘Two Face’ suggests two contrasting appearances, although breeder Leslie Woodriff’s intended meaning is not documented. The words form an expressive cultivar name referring to the plant’s contrasting leaf faces.
