Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’

A registered hybrid between two Mexican species

Susie Zug raised Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ in California in 1955 from Begonia imperialis × B. Pustulata; it was registered in 1958. ‘Silver Jewell’, with two final l’s, is the registered spelling.

Both parents are Mexican rhizomatous species, but the cultivar itself has no single wild habitat. Its horticultural origin lies in the cross between ‘Shishido’ and Begonia goegoensis.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. The light is too strong if it heats the leaves and the upper leaf surface bleaches or scars and the rhizome dries unevenly. If the room is too dim, petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. The plant naturally displays the silver pattern across the quilted green blades. This appearance is inherited: too little light weakens its definition, while stronger direct sun cannot add to it. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ below the surface and water after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Pour slowly enough that dry channels rewet, stopping only after water exits freely below. A damp, compact layer beneath the rhizome is more dangerous than a short dry surface because it restricts oxygen. Do not treat the rhizome as a succulent store. Hard dry-outs can leave it alive but without enough feeder roots for the canopy. Check the shallow root zone below the newest growth on ‘Silver Jewell’ as well as the exposed pot edge. Recheck the lower mix after a move: brighter light speeds drying, while cooler air or a larger pot slows it.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ depends on a creeping rhizome above a shallow network of fine roots. A practical potting medium is an airy but moisture-holding blend based on fine bark, peat-free substrate and pumice or perlite. The mix must stay springy: dense peat traps water, but an overly coarse orchid mix leaves dry gaps around feeder roots. Follow the horizontal spread with a wide drainage pot. A deep pot simply holds more wet mix below the active roots. Keep the rhizome of ‘Silver Jewell’ uncovered and give its growing end open surface space.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 15 °C. The lower limit assumes active drainage. A saturated pot should be kept warmer. Avoid local heat around one side of the pot, which makes moisture difficult to judge.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’, moderate, stable humidity supports clean leaf expansion without creating persistently wet conditions. Aim around 50–70% if new leaves catch or crisp as they open. Pair moderate humidity around ‘Silver Jewell’ with enough air movement to dry the crown after cleaning. Use mild continuous air exchange and keep occasional strong blasts away from the foliage.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ a complete foliage fertiliser at about quarter strength every five to six weeks. Do not follow a rigid summer-versus-winter rule. Check how actively the plant is growing and how quickly the substrate dries. A low regular dose during growth is safer for salt-sensitive Begonia roots than an occasional concentrated application. The shallow roots of ‘Silver Jewell’ need regular dilute nutrition; a concentrated dose can burn them.

Repotting

Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ needs a new pot once the rhizome reaches the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, water moves unevenly or the substrate has compacted. Select the next modest size, generally 2–3 cm wider. Lift the shallow root mass intact. Separate only a rhizome section that already has feeder roots and an active growing point. Choose a warm, well-lit period of active growth, when disturbed roots can recover promptly. Set ‘Silver Jewell’ so the growing rhizome has room to advance across the fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ remains best as a low rhizomatous mound. Guide the surface growth into free space and divide a crowded section only when it has its own roots. Rotation is useful for balance, but wait until soft foliage has expanded before changing its direction. The raised surfaces across the small silver-patterned quilted leaves of Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ catch dust but should not be pressed or polished. Use a soft brush between the bumps, supporting the blade from beneath. Remove a dead leaf with clean scissors, leaving healthy stem and growing points untouched.

How to help Begonia ‘Silver Jewell’ recover

Velvety silver leaves curl at the margins

A partly dry root ball, hot airflow or an abrupt humidity change can curl the hairy edges. Check the mix before watering. Curling leaves in wet mix point to root stress. Stabilise moisture and use a humidifier if needed. Keep water off the velvety surface.

Metallic flecks become wet-looking spots

Normal silver flecking remains dry and fixed. Lesions that appear translucent, soften, develop yellow margins or enlarge may be bacterial or fungal. Isolate the plant, remove affected leaves and improve airflow around the low clump. If a spot reaches the petiole or rhizome, cut back promptly.

White powder coats the hairy blade

Powdery mildew can lodge among the fine hairs. Dried mineral residue stays where a droplet landed; mildew spreads or returns after wiping. Remove heavily affected leaves, keep the canopy dry and increase spacing. Use a labelled mildew treatment if necessary, testing it first because the textured silver surface may keep spray marks.

Softness beneath the silver clump

Firm older skin can be brown without causing concern. A dark section that feels wet or smells sour means the surface stem has begun to decay. Lift it from saturated mix, remove the damaged length and root a firm silver-leaved section before the remaining growth points are reached.

Small, hardened or scarred new leaves

One undersized leaf can follow repotting or damage as the velvety clump settles. Repeated stiff blades with no increase in size call for a closer look at the exposed growth point and shallow roots. Replace compacted mix or correct erratic watering, then wait for a supple expanding leaf before feeding.

Why ‘Silver Jewell’ belongs out of pets’ reach

‘Silver Jewell’, including its finely hairy, shallowly bullate leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the concentration is greatest in roots and related underground tissues. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

The correct spelling ‘Silver Jewell’

The registered cultivar spelling is ‘Silver Jewell’, with two final “l”s. Silver refers naturally to the leaf colouring; the reason for the unusual spelling of Jewell is not documented.
