Within the Rex Cultorum Group, ‘Spitfire’ is maintained as an individual cultivated clone recognised by narrow, sharply pointed blades carrying red-pink centres with pale green, cream or silver margins. The principal wild background comes from Begonia rex, native to shaded, humid rocky places in the eastern Himalaya and is the group’s principal wild ancestor.

Further tropical rhizomatous species expanded the cultivated lineage, and repeated selection fixed combinations such as red-pink centres with pale green, cream or silver margins in named clones. ‘Spitfire’ exists only in cultivation. Light

Place Begonia ‘Spitfire’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Protect it from the hottest glass light. Otherwise metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. With too little usable light, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Healthy new leaves naturally develop the reddish-pink blade with its silver-green edge. Give enough light for firm growth without using direct sun to force a deeper shade.
