‘Samba’ is a stable Rex Cultorum clone recognised by burgundy-marked leaves. Begonia rex supplies the principal wild background to the group from humid, shaded eastern Himalayan sites and contributes to the group’s cultivated diversity.

Successive crosses added tropical rhizomatous Begonia species to the lineage; growers selected the resulting seedlings for stable characters such as burgundy-marked leaves. This cultivar exists only in cultivation; vegetative propagation preserves its growth habit together with burgundy veins, flecks and margin markings.

How to keep Begonia ‘Samba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) healthy

Light

Give Begonia ‘Samba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a position at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. A position several metres from a window is too dark when the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Use the newest mature leaf as the light check. The plant develops the burgundy pattern around the lime-green blade as part of its natural pigmentation. Low light can make the colour less distinct, while harsh sun bleaches or burns it.

Watering

Begonia ‘Samba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is ready for water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Water from several points across the surface, continue to runoff and discard the collected water. Waterlogged mix below the rhizome can damage the shallow roots before the canopy visibly wilts. Do not rely on the rhizome as a water store. Prolonged dryness damages the roots beneath it. Stable coloured splashes are dry and integrated into the blade. Water-soaked dark areas expanding from the edge are lesions. Isolate the plant, remove affected leaves and keep water off the canopy. Check the crown promptly if darkness tracks down a petiole.

Bleached white patches on bright leaves

Direct sun can bleach chartreuse tissue until it is papery. Move the plant into bright filtered light and keep any healthy part of the leaf. Powdery mildew forms a spreading floury coating on the surface; isolate the plant, improve airflow and remove heavily coated leaves.

Hard, puckered new lime leaves

Broad mites can distort the tender crown, producing brittle bronzing that is easy to miss against yellow-green tissue. Thrips leave more linear rasps and black specks. Use magnification and isolate the plant if damage repeats. Treat the pest you find and keep excess liquid away from the rhizome.

Keeping ‘Samba’ away from curious pets

‘Samba’, including its burgundy-marked leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the concentration is greatest in roots and related underground tissues. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
