The cultivated origin of ‘Rumba’

Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a named clone in the Rex Cultorum Group recognised in cultivation by small, nearly black blades and bold irregular pink strokes. The group’s principal wild ancestor is Begonia rex, a species of shaded, humid rocky habitats in the eastern Himalaya and is the principal wild ancestor of the group.

Tropical rhizomatous begonias from beyond the Himalayan range entered later crosses and broadened the leaf forms available to breeders, including small, nearly black blades. ‘Rumba’ exists only in cultivation, and clonal propagation preserves small, nearly black blades from one plant generation to the next.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. The light is too strong if it heats the leaves and metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. In a shaded shelf position, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Aim for healthy compact growth; stronger light does not create inherited colour. The plant expresses the compact crown and small heart-shaped foliage best when growth is compact and well lit. Harsh direct sun causes damage and does not strengthen the colour or texture.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) below the surface and water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Rewet the entire root ball in one pass, allow full drainage and keep the drainage hole clear. Small sips leave dry pockets behind. The surface may look dry while wet mix remains trapped under the rhizome, where oxygen is most limited. One hard dry-out may leave the rhizome alive but unable to support its full canopy. Lift the pot and probe below the live rhizome of ‘Rumba’. Use both checks because leaf droop can follow either dry roots or damage in wet mix. Recheck the lower mix after a move: brighter light speeds drying, while cooler air or a larger pot slows it.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) depends on a horizontal rhizome with delicate roots spread through the upper layer of mix. If using ready-made houseplant mix, adapt it to give the same structure as a moisture-holding but fast-draining mix of peat-free substrate, fine bark and perlite or pumice. The feeder roots need close contact with moisture without being sealed inside dense compost. A broad pot only slightly wider than the roots suits the sideways growth better than extra depth. Position the rhizome of ‘Rumba’ above the mix so air can reach its base after watering.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 13 °C. Keep both foliage and pot away from night-time glass chill and air-conditioning outlets. Avoid local heat around one side of the pot, which makes moisture difficult to judge.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group), a stable 55–70% humidity is helpful during leaf expansion, though established plants often adapt to an ordinary room. Keep ‘Rumba’ away from dry heater air while a new patterned leaf is soft and expanding. Fresh air matters most after watering, cleaning or while a new leaf is opening.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia ‘Rumba’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks. Any division must keep roots and a bud. Continue feeding only while temperature, light and active growth support normal nutrient use. Pink markings on dark leaves become tan

Fixed pink or silver markings are cultivar colour. Tan papery zones facing strong light are scorch; irregular pale rasping with black specks suggests thrips. Check the position and leaf surface. Filter direct light after scorch, or isolate and treat the plant when pest signs are present.

Black veins and margins seem to widen

Rumba’s small heart-shaped leaves can have strong dark venation and edging. Normal dark tissue is symmetrical and firm. Remove a leaf only if blackening is wet, asymmetric or progressive, then inspect the petiole base to ensure decay has not reached the compact crown.

Small leaves curl tightly

A light dry pot can curl the thin blades, but repeated hard bronzed leaves point to broad mites. Check the root ball and examine the newest growth with magnification. Rehydrate only if dry; otherwise isolate and treat confirmed mites, directing treatment into the tight centre.

Compact rhizome rots under wet mix

Rumba’s modest root system grows best in a shallow pot with only a small volume of mix around it. Unpot a persistently heavy, wilting plant and remove every soft root and rhizome section. Repot firm tissue shallowly in a close container and start a healthy leaf cutting if the last node is at risk.

Is ‘Rumba’ safe around pets?

‘Rumba’, including its small, nearly black blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; buried roots create the greatest exposure during repotting. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

A Cuban dance in the cultivar list

Rumba names a group of Afro-Cuban music and dance traditions and, more broadly, a ballroom dance. Here it provides a rhythmic horticultural name.

The plant is part of the Rex Cultorum Group, developed through many generations of crossing and selection. Begonia rex gave this foliage group its best-known name, but it is not the only species in its ancestry.
