How horticulture produced ‘Rondeau’

‘Rondeau’ is a distinct Rex Cultorum clone identified by broad, heart-shaped blades and lime-green with bold burgundy markings. The wider lineage begins with Begonia rex from humid rock faces, cave margins and shaded valleys in the eastern Himalaya, forming the principal wild background of the group.

Later breeders crossed that lineage with tropical rhizomatous begonias from additional regions, then selected seedlings that retained lime-green with bold burgundy markings. ‘Rondeau’ exists only in cultivation and is propagated vegetatively to preserve lime-green with bold burgundy markings and its established growth habit.

Light

Place Begonia ‘Rondeau’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Too much unfiltered light is visible when metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. Low light also weakens new growth and reduces leaf size. The petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. The markings are genetically fixed, while stronger light increases the risk of scorch. Healthy growth shows the rounded patterned canopy and healthy compact form most clearly. Weak light reduces its definition by weakening growth, while harsh sun damages the surface without improving it.

Watering

Water Begonia ‘Rondeau’ (Rex Cultorum Group) when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Wet the whole root ball slowly until fresh runoff appears, then empty the saucer or cover pot. The rhizome provides limited reserve, so prevent the root ball from drying completely. Direct sun can leave a dry pale tan patch on the exposed side. Restore filtered light and allow new foliage to replace the damage. Mark the edge of a glassy patch in sheltered tissue and remove the leaf if the patch spreads.

One old inner leaf may fall as the dense clump fills. Several soft petiole bases or an odour indicate crown decay. Expose the rhizome and remove every dark soft section.

Is ‘Rondeau’ toxic to cats and dogs?

‘Rondeau’, including its broad, heart-shaped blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the root system holds more of the toxic principle than the visible shoots. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
