‘Red Tango’ is a stable Rex Cultorum clone recognised by broad, softly curved blades and rosy pink, silver and dark green bands. Begonia rex supplies the principal wild background to the group from humid, shaded eastern Himalayan sites and contributes to the group’s cultivated diversity.

Successive crosses added tropical rhizomatous Begonia species to the lineage; growers selected the resulting seedlings for stable characters such as broad, softly curved blades. This cultivar exists only in cultivation; vegetative propagation preserves its growth habit together with rosy pink, silver and dark green bands.

Light

A practical home position for Begonia ‘Red Tango’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Screen harsh midday rays because metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. With too little usable light, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Do not move it into harsher sun just to deepen the colour. Natural leaf pigments produce the red and pink tones within the green-silver pattern. Growth made in dim light is less distinct, but hot direct sun fades or scars the coloured tissue.
