Within the Rex Cultorum Group, ‘Red Kiss’ is maintained as an individual cultivated clone recognised by small rounded blades carrying metallic red centres, silver-grey highlights and near-black margins. The principal wild background comes from Begonia rex, native to shaded, humid rocky places in the eastern Himalaya and is the group’s principal wild ancestor.

Further tropical rhizomatous species expanded the cultivated lineage, and repeated selection fixed combinations such as metallic red centres, silver-grey highlights and near-black margins in named clones. ‘Red Kiss’ exists only in cultivation. Propagation from the named plant preserves small rounded blades, metallic red centres, silver-grey highlights and near-black margins and its established growth habit.

Growing Begonia ‘Red Kiss’ (Rex Cultorum Group) indoors

Light

For usable indoor light, stand Begonia ‘Red Kiss’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Protect it from the hottest glass light. Otherwise metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. Insufficient light shows as this change: the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. The plant develops the pink-red colour and purple-black zones through natural pigmentation. Stronger sun increases the risk of scorch. Low light weakens the display and excess light bleaches it. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Lift the pot and test the mix. Water Begonia ‘Red Kiss’ (Rex Cultorum Group) when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture.
