The cultivated origin of ‘Red Heart’

Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a named clone in the Rex Cultorum Group recognised in cultivation by upright heart-shaped leaves. The group’s principal wild ancestor is Begonia rex, a species of shaded, humid rocky habitats in the eastern Himalaya and is the principal wild ancestor of the group.

Tropical rhizomatous begonias from beyond the Himalayan range entered later crosses and broadened the leaf forms available to breeders, including upright heart-shaped leaves. ‘Red Heart’ exists only in cultivation, and clonal propagation preserves upright heart-shaped leaves from one plant generation to the next.

How to keep Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) healthy

Light

Give Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a position at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. A little early-morning light is tolerated after acclimation. Direct midday and afternoon rays scorch the thin patterned blades. Move it closer to the window if the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. The plant develops the red centre and dark outer margin as part of its natural pigmentation. Low light can make the colour less distinct, while harsh sun bleaches or burns it.

Watering

Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is ready for water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Rewet the complete root zone in one pass and remove every pool of runoff afterward. Keep the rhizome above the mix. Burying it in wet substrate removes air from the crown and roots. A short surface dry phase is acceptable. Letting the whole shallow root zone dry can cost roots and leaves. Check below the active rhizome end on ‘Red Heart’ as well as at the drier outer edge of the wide pot. Light, temperature, leaf area, pot size and pot material all change how quickly the mix dries.

Substrate and roots

The root structure of Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a sideways-growing rhizome with fine feeder roots near the surface. For an even balance of air and moisture, use an open small-particle blend that combines peat-free substrate or coir with fine bark and pumice or perlite. Very fine substrate can turn airless, but a coarse orchid mix leaves the shallow root mat patchily dry. Use a shallow, wide pot with drainage so the rhizome can travel across the surface. Do not mound substrate over ‘Red Heart’. The sideways rhizome should rest above the shallow root zone.

Temperature

Aim for stable temperatures around 18–26 °C for Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group), using 13 °C as the lower limit. Pull the plant away from cold windows at night, especially while the substrate is still moist. Hot dry airflow damages soft growth and makes the upper mix dry faster than the roots below.

Humidity and airflow

Keep the humidity around Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) steady. If the newest leaves open cleanly, the room humidity is adequate. Otherwise a stable 55–70% can help. Air moisture around ‘Red Heart’ should remain stable without condensation collecting on the rhizome. Good spacing is as important as humidity, particularly around a dense crown.

Fertilising

Apply a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks to Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) only while the plant is growing actively. Use the lower concentration for slow growth and the higher end only when light, warmth and root activity are all strong. Repotting

Give Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a new pot when the rhizome reaches or circles the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, watering becomes uneven or the mix loses its open structure. Choose one about 2–3 cm wider while keeping drainage and root depth appropriate. Lift the shallow root mass intact. Divide only where a rhizome section already has roots and an active bud. Time the work for active root growth, then return the plant to its familiar light level. Angle the creeping rhizome of ‘Red Heart’ away from the rim without covering it in fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Do not tie up the individual leaves of Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group). Guide the creeping rhizome into open surface space, and divide it only where a rooted piece can keep an active bud and healthy leaf. Guide new growth while it is flexible and make only gradual changes to the pot's orientation. The dark wavy edge of Begonia ‘Red Heart’ catches easily. Move the plant by its pot and brush dust from the red centre outward without pulling at the margin. Remove dry leaf stalks and old flowers cleanly, without peeling live tissue from a cane or rhizome.

Problems to watch for with Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Rex Cultorum Group)

Dark centres and margins look like rot

Red leaves naturally darken towards black at the centre and margins. Healthy pigment is firm and follows the broad heart-shaped pattern. Rot forms irregular soft or water-soaked tissue and may continue into the petiole.

Broad heart-shaped leaves curl down

When the broad leaves curl down, feel the mix before adding water. Water thoroughly if it is partly dry. Limp petioles in wet mix suggest damaged fine roots and need a root check.

Pale scars on red tissue

Thrips feeding appears as irregular silver-tan rasping and may leave black specks inside folded new leaves. Compare the mark with the cultivar’s normal dark centre and edge. Treat only when repeated damage or insects are found.

Several central leaves detach together

Multiple inner petioles releasing from one point is an urgent crown warning. Expose the rhizome, cut away dark, soft tissue and root a healthy outer section shallowly. Save a healthy leaf if decay approaches the last growing tip.

Are any parts of ‘Red Heart’ safe for pets?

‘Red Heart’, including its upright heart-shaped leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; exposed roots create the highest risk during repotting. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

A red centre in the name

‘Red Heart’ can be read directly as a reference to a vivid central area on the leaf. Heart describes the red central marking on the leaf; the botanical term cordate refers specifically to leaf shape.

Rex Cultorum plants are complex garden hybrids valued for leaf form and colour. Their group name preserves the influence of Begonia rex, the “king begonia”, without treating every cultivar as that species.
