‘Jive’ is a stable Rex Cultorum clone recognised by small chartreuse blades. Begonia rex supplies the principal wild background to the group from humid, shaded eastern Himalayan sites and contributes to the group’s cultivated diversity.

Successive crosses added tropical rhizomatous Begonia species to the lineage; growers selected the resulting seedlings for stable characters such as small chartreuse blades. This cultivar exists only in cultivation; vegetative propagation preserves its growth habit together with small chartreuse blades.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Jive’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Screen harsh midday rays because metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. Move it closer to the window if the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Aim for healthy compact growth; stronger light does not create inherited colour. The plant develops the yellow-green colour of the heart-shaped leaves naturally. Useful light keeps new growth compact and the colour clear, but direct sun cannot intensify an inherited pattern.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Jive’ (Rex Cultorum Group) below the surface and water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Natural dark edging or dry browning

A normal burgundy-brown border is flexible and repeats around the leaf. Dry damage feels crisp and often starts at the most exposed ruffles. Keep a firm chocolate-coloured margin. Check root moisture, salt residue and nearby airflow if the edge becomes crisp.

Ruffled margins curl more tightly

Some waviness belongs to Jive. A sudden inward curl across several leaves may follow a dry spell or hot airflow. Limp curling in a heavy pot points to poor root aeration. Check the root ball first. A healthy new leaf should expand without the same curl.

Overlapping ruffles rub and mark

Crowded chartreuse leaves can abrade one another or catch on the pot rim. Give the clump space, turn it carefully and remove only fully spent inner leaves. A dry scrape should stop; a soft expanding mark needs the affected leaf removed and better air exchange.

Is ‘Jive’ safe around pets?

‘Jive’, including its small chartreuse blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the concentration is greatest in roots and related underground tissues. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
