How horticulture produced ‘Fedor’

‘Fedor’ is a distinct Rex Cultorum clone identified by medium-sized silver blades and clean, branching dark vein network. The wider lineage begins with Begonia rex from humid rock faces, cave margins and shaded valleys in the eastern Himalaya, forming the principal wild background of the group.

Later breeders crossed that lineage with tropical rhizomatous begonias from additional regions, then selected seedlings that retained clean, branching dark vein network. ‘Fedor’ exists only in cultivation and is propagated vegetatively to preserve clean, branching dark vein network and its established growth habit.

Growing Begonia ‘Fedor’ (Rex Cultorum Group) indoors

Light

For usable indoor light, stand Begonia ‘Fedor’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Direct sun tolerance is limited: metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins under a strong unacclimated beam. In a shaded shelf position, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Expect the silver blade and dark branching venation on healthy growth. Dim conditions reduce clarity and strength, but direct sun does not create more colour. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Lift the pot and test the mix. Water Begonia ‘Fedor’ (Rex Cultorum Group) when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Rewet the entire root ball in one pass, allow full drainage and keep the drainage hole clear. Small sips leave dry pockets behind. Repeated complete drying weakens the feeder roots even when the thick rhizome still looks firm. A cool, saturated pot is especially unsafe for the fine root mat. Water ‘Fedor’ according to the active root zone, which may stay moist after the pot edge has dried. Humidity and airflow

At home, most Rex begonias manage ordinary room air, but 55–70% humidity improves expansion of soft new leaves. Give ‘Fedor’ open space among other plants so moderate humidity does not turn into a wet, still pocket. Fresh air matters most after watering, cleaning or while a new leaf is opening.

Fertilising

Use a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks for Begonia ‘Fedor’ (Rex Cultorum Group) while it is producing new leaves or stems. Dark veins look wider than expected

Fedor’s silver leaves are naturally set off by dark venation. The pattern can look broader as the leaf expands, but healthy tissue remains firm and the lines stay organised. Irregular glassy darkness that continues into a soft petiole is damaged tissue.

A dry tan area on silver tissue

A sharply bounded patch on the exposed side is usually scorch or contact with hot glass. Move the plant back into bright filtered light and keep the healthy part of the leaf. Damage that stays soft or enlarges away from the light source needs the leaf removed.

Medium-sized leaves curl downward

A gentle arch can be part of the mature leaf posture. If the whole plant curls suddenly, feel the root ball. Light, dry mix needs water; heavy mix and limp stalks point to poor root aeration. Deal with the moisture problem and check that the next leaf opens normally.

New silver leaves keep getting smaller

Fedor should maintain a medium leaf size once established. Check for cramped roots or collapsed mix and make sure the new bud receives bright filtered light. Refresh exhausted mix and resume light feeding after a firm leaf begins expanding. Remove damaged roots first.

Preventing pets from chewing ‘Fedor’

‘Fedor’, including its medium-sized silver blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the root system holds more of the toxic principle than the visible shoots. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
