‘Etna’ is a stable Rex Cultorum clone recognised by small dark green to burgundy blades and deep red markings. Begonia rex supplies the principal wild background to the group from humid, shaded eastern Himalayan sites and contributes to the group’s cultivated diversity.

Successive crosses added tropical rhizomatous Begonia species to the lineage; growers selected the resulting seedlings for stable characters such as small dark green to burgundy blades. This cultivar exists only in cultivation; vegetative propagation preserves its growth habit together with deep red markings.

How to keep Begonia ‘Etna’ (Rex Cultorum Group) healthy

Light

Give Begonia ‘Etna’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a position at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. Low light also weakens new growth and reduces leaf size. The petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. The plant develops the fiery red markings on the near-black foliage through natural pigmentation. Stronger sun increases the risk of scorch. Low light weakens the display and excess light bleaches it.

Watering

Begonia ‘Etna’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is ready for water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Wet the whole root ball slowly until fresh runoff appears, then empty the saucer or cover pot. Keep the rhizome above the mix. Burying it in wet substrate removes air from the crown and roots. If the shallow root zone dries fully, fine roots die first and the leaf canopy may fall. Use the moisture below the creeping rhizome of ‘Etna’; a dusty surface can hide moisture lower in the pot. Active growth, warm airflow and terracotta dry the mix faster than cool light, dense substrate or plastic.

Scalloped edges turn crisp

Etna’s scallops form a repeated dark-red outline, so dry damage appears as broken, brittle sections within that rhythm. Check whether the fine root ball became light or a warm draught struck one side. Remove the cause and keep any healthy part of the leaf.

Dust is usually even and lifts with a dry soft brush. Grey fuzzy colonies on soft brown tissue are typical of Botrytis, especially in a crowded damp crown. Bag and remove the affected leaf, clear old petioles and increase airflow. Examine the rhizome immediately if the grey area reaches the base.

Dark petioles detach at soil level

Colour can hide rot, so test firmness. Petioles attached to a healthy rhizome resist a gentle touch. Loose petioles around a soft, sour-smelling base indicate crown decay. Cut out all soft tissue and reroot a firm section. Take a healthy leaf cutting promptly if the remaining crown is at risk.

Are any parts of ‘Etna’ safe for pets?

‘Etna’, including its small dark green to burgundy blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and other buried tissues contain the greatest concentration. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
