The cultivated origin of ‘Dew Drop’

Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a named clone in the Rex Cultorum Group recognised in cultivation by silver-pink-and-green blended leaves. The group’s principal wild ancestor is Begonia rex, a species of shaded, humid rocky habitats in the eastern Himalaya and is the principal wild ancestor of the group.

Tropical rhizomatous begonias from beyond the Himalayan range entered later crosses and broadened the leaf forms available to breeders, including silver-pink-and-green blended leaves. ‘Dew Drop’ exists only in cultivation, and clonal propagation preserves silver-pink-and-green blended leaves from one plant generation to the next.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. The light is too strong if it heats the leaves and metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. Insufficient light shows as this change: the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Healthy leaves naturally show the metallic pewter upper surface and red underside. Give enough light for firm compact growth, but do not use hot sun in an attempt to strengthen the pattern. More sun is not better once growth is compact and colour is clear.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) below the surface and water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Apply enough water to rewet every side of the pot and allow all excess to drain away. Keep the rhizome above the mix. Burying it in wet substrate removes air from the crown and roots. The rhizome stores a little water, but a complete dry-out kills fine roots and may collapse the canopy. Lift the pot and probe below the live rhizome of ‘Dew Drop’. Use both checks because leaf droop can follow either dry roots or damage in wet mix. Recheck the lower mix after a move: brighter light speeds drying, while cooler air or a larger pot slows it.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) depends on a horizontal rhizome with delicate roots spread through the upper layer of mix. Use a springy mix of peat-free substrate, small bark and fine pumice or perlite. Avoid both compact fine compost and bark-only mixes: the first stays airless, the second leaves dry gaps. Use a wide container with clear drainage, but avoid adding empty space beyond the active roots. Position the rhizome of ‘Dew Drop’ above the mix so air can reach its base after watering.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 13 °C. Do not let leaves touch a winter pane or place the root ball in the path of an open-door draught. Avoid local heat around one side of the pot, which makes moisture difficult to judge.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group), most Rex begonias manage ordinary room air, but 55–70% humidity improves expansion of soft new leaves. Keep ‘Dew Drop’ away from dry heater air while a new patterned leaf is soft and expanding. Leave space between plants so moist leaves and the top of the pot can dry normally.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks. Base feeding on active growth, useful light, stable warmth and normal water use. A low regular dose during growth is safer for salt-sensitive Begonia roots than an occasional concentrated application. Use modest nutrition for ‘Dew Drop’. Lush soft leaves from excess nitrogen are easier to damage.

Repotting

Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group) needs a new pot once the rhizome reaches or circles the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, watering becomes uneven or the mix loses its open structure. Move to a pot only 2–3 cm wider so unused substrate does not remain wet. Keep rooted rhizome sections together and remove only loose exhausted mix. A division needs roots and a live bud. Repot during visible growth and keep the plant at the same depth afterward. Position ‘Dew Drop’ slightly off-centre so the growing rhizome has a clear path across the pot.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Do not tie up the individual leaves of Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ (Rex Cultorum Group). Guide the creeping rhizome into open surface space, and divide it only where a rooted piece can keep an active bud and healthy leaf. Turn the container gradually between growth flushes. Sudden large rotations make soft stems or petioles bend towards the new light direction. The large textured leaves of Begonia ‘Dew Drop’ need support across the whole palm when handled. Use a soft brush in the shallow texture and avoid bending the red-backed blade. Wait until an ageing leaf is fully yellow, then cut it at the base. Do not pull at a resistant stalk.

Silver, pink and green vary between leaves

Begonia ‘Dewdrop’ naturally produces a different balance of the three colours on each broad blade. This shifting mix of silver, pink and green is normal on firm leaves. Look for bleaching, papery patches, loss of firmness or progressively smaller growth.

A mature broad leaf hangs outward

Mature Dewdrop leaves become much wider than the starter foliage and often arch beyond the pot on firm petioles. Give them enough clearance to spread. A petiole that turns soft at the base needs immediate inspection.

A large metallic blade creases or tears

Broad leaves can fold during handling or rub against nearby surfaces. A dry mark that stays the same size is mechanical damage, and the healthy part of the leaf can remain. Remove it if the injured area becomes soft, wet-looking or begins to spread towards the petiole.

Wide low clump wilts despite moist mix

Decaying fine roots leave the foliage limp even when the root ball is wet. Unpot a persistently limp plant, remove soft roots and test the rhizome. Repot the healthy rhizome shallowly in a small pot of fresh, airy mix.

Managing ‘Dew Drop’ around household pets

‘Dew Drop’, including its silver-pink-and-green blended leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; exposed roots create the highest risk during repotting. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.
