Begonia ‘Breakdance’ (Rex Cultorum Group) is a named clone in the Rex Cultorum Group recognised in cultivation by sharply lobed leaves. The group’s principal wild ancestor is Begonia rex, a species of shaded, humid rocky habitats in the eastern Himalaya and is the principal wild ancestor of the group.

Tropical rhizomatous begonias from beyond the Himalayan range entered later crosses and broadened the leaf forms available to breeders, including sharply lobed leaves. ‘Breakdance’ exists only in cultivation, and clonal propagation preserves sharply lobed leaves from one plant generation to the next.

Light

Give Begonia ‘Breakdance’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a position at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. A little early-morning light is tolerated after acclimation. Direct midday and afternoon rays scorch the thin patterned blades. In a shaded shelf position, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. The markings are genetically fixed, while stronger light increases the risk of scorch. The plant naturally carries the bright primary veins against the dark blade. Watering

Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared.
