Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group)

The ancestry carried by ‘Bolero’

‘Bolero’ is a stable Rex Cultorum clone recognised by broad silver blades. Begonia rex supplies the principal wild background to the group from humid, shaded eastern Himalayan sites and contributes to the group’s cultivated diversity.

Successive crosses added tropical rhizomatous Begonia species to the lineage; growers selected the resulting seedlings for stable characters such as broad silver blades. This cultivar exists only in cultivation; vegetative propagation preserves its growth habit together with broad silver blades crossed by crisp dark veins.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group) at an east window. A south or west window also works from 0.5–1.5 m back, provided hot sun does not reach the leaves. Acclimate it gradually, since sudden intense exposure means metallic and pale zones bleach first, followed by dry brown margins. With too little usable light, the petioles elongate, the crown leans and new leaves are smaller with flatter colour contrast. Expect the silver surface and dark network of veins on healthy growth. Dim conditions reduce clarity and strength, but direct sun does not create more colour. Move the plant towards stronger light in small stages.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group) below the surface and water when roughly the upper 2–3 cm has dried and the lower shallow root zone still holds a trace of moisture. Soak the substrate evenly, let it drain fully and never leave the inner pot standing in water. A cool, saturated pot is especially unsafe for the fine root mat. The rhizome stores a little water, but a complete dry-out kills fine roots and may collapse the canopy. Use the moisture below the creeping rhizome of ‘Bolero’; a dusty surface can hide moisture lower in the pot. Active growth, warm airflow and terracotta dry the mix faster than cool light, dense substrate or plastic.

Substrate and roots

Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group) depends on a broad surface rhizome and a relatively small mat of fine roots beneath it. Aim for an airy but evenly wetting blend based on coir or peat-free substrate with small bark and pumice or perlite. A fine but springy mix is important because the roots are too small for bark alone and too air-sensitive for heavy peat. A shallow pot makes moisture easier to judge and gives the creeping rhizome room to advance. Set ‘Bolero’ with its fine roots in the mix and its creeping rhizome still visible.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group) grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 13 °C. Winter ventilation should not blow across damp roots or soft new leaves. A heater under the sill creates uneven drying and can desiccate the window-facing leaves.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group), if the newest leaves open cleanly, the room humidity is adequate. Otherwise a stable 55–70% can help. Keep humidity in the air around ‘Bolero’ while leaving its crown and surface rhizome dry. Keep humid air moving gently so leaf bases and stem tissue can dry.

Fertilising

During active growth, give Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group) a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks. A plant that is still unfolding leaves in winter still uses nutrients, while an inactive one does not. Begonia roots are sensitive to concentrated salts, so avoid strong doses and fertilise only after the root ball is moist. The pattern on ‘Bolero’ is not a sign that it needs a stronger dose. Dilute feeding protects the shallow roots.

Repotting

Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group) needs a new pot once the rhizome reaches or circles the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, watering becomes uneven or the mix loses its open structure. A pot 2–3 cm wider is normally enough for the next stage of growth. Loosen only collapsed outer mix and keep the shallow roots attached to the living rhizome. Work while the plant is actively growing in stable warmth so new roots can resume quickly. Place the growing rhizome end of ‘Bolero’ towards the open side of the new pot and keep its top visible.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Do not tie up the individual leaves of Begonia ‘Bolero’ (Rex Cultorum Group). Guide the creeping rhizome into open surface space, and divide it only where a rooted piece can keep an active bud and healthy leaf. Turn the pot gradually over several weeks so fresh growth can adjust without twisting. Clean the broad silver blades of Begonia ‘Bolero’ only after they have hardened. Support each leaf from beneath and use a barely damp soft cloth without rubbing along the dark veins. Cut fully spent leaves or flower stems cleanly at the base. Tearing can injure the crown.

Crisp dark veins look like spreading damage

Bolero is silver-forward with sharply defined dark venation. Normal veins repeat across the blade and feel as firm as the surrounding tissue. Irregular, glassy or papery darkness that crosses the veins is damaged tissue.

Silver surface looks dull or marked

Dust and dried mineral residue are conspicuous on a pale leaf. If a mark sits on the surface, lift it gently with a soft damp cloth and let the leaf dry with good air exchange. A mark within the tissue remains after wiping and should be watched for spread.

Burgundy petioles are mistaken for rot

The cultivar’s burgundy leaf stalks are normal when they are uniformly coloured and firm. A stalk that becomes glassy, pinched or soft near the base is different: remove that leaf and check the neighbouring bases promptly for the same change.

Browning ruffled silver edges

The raised outline can dry before the centre after uneven root moisture, salt build-up or a heater draught. Check the mix and placement, then deal with the cause. Fresh silver leaves should open with a complete ruffled edge. Let a moist pot begin to dry normally; new leaves will replace the crisp edge.

Why ‘Bolero’ belongs out of pets’ reach

‘Bolero’, including its broad silver blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; buried roots create the greatest exposure during repotting. Keep the pot beyond a pet’s reach. Collect removed leaves and block access to exposed roots or crown pieces during repotting. Recheck access after moving furniture or placing the pot on a lower surface. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

Dance and music in the name ‘Bolero’

Bolero names both a Spanish dance and several related musical forms. Either may have inspired the cultivar name, but its precise reference is not documented.

Patrick Worley raised ‘Bolero’ in California in 1978, and it was registered in 1980. Its parentage is given only as Rex Cultorum, without a more specific cross.
