Begonia masoniana 'Tricolor' is a rare and highly decorative cultivar of the Chinese species Begonia masoniana. First raised by breeder Mike Kartuz from seed, this selection stood out among its siblings for its striking variegation. Its broad, textured leaves are marked by the iconic brown “iron cross” in the center, surrounded by green, and framed by a creamy outer band that extends towards the margins. This bold tricolour effect makes it a must-have for collectors of unusual foliage Begonias.
Begonia masoniana is native to southern China and northern Vietnam, where it grows in shaded, humid forest environments. The wild type is best known for its dark iron cross marking, but the 'Tricolor' cultivar elevates this pattern with creamy variegation. It was developed by U.S. breeder Mike Kartuz, whose seed-raised plants revealed this distinct, ornamental form.
'Tricolor' is evergreen indoors and produces new leaves steadily from its rhizomatous base. The puckered surface, iron cross marking, and creamy margins stay consistent through the seasons if grown with stable light, moisture, and humidity.
The genus Begonia was named in the 18th century by botanist Charles Plumier in honour of Michel Bégon (1638 – 1710), a French administrator and amateur botanist who supported early plant exploration. 'Tricolor' extends this heritage as one of the most striking modern cultivars of the Iron Cross Begonia.
With its brown iron cross, creamy variegation, and textured foliage, Begonia masoniana 'Tricolor' is one of the most visually dramatic Rex-style Begonias. Order now and enjoy its bold, painterly leaves in your indoor collection.
