Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’

Plants sold as Begonia maculata ‘Polka Dot’ belong to the cultivated forms of Begonia maculata, a species from southeastern Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

The wild species grows among warm, humid Atlantic Forest vegetation shaped by regular rainfall and light filtered through the canopy.

How to care for Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’

Light

Place Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ beside a large east-facing window, or 0.5–1.5 m back from a south or west window behind a sheer curtain. Protect it from the hottest glass light. Otherwise bleached tan patches and crisp margins appear on the window-facing leaves. Low light also weakens new growth and reduces leaf size. The canes lengthen between nodes, lean towards the window and carry smaller, duller new leaves. Use the newest mature leaf as the light check. The plant develops the silver polka dots and red undersides naturally. Useful light keeps new growth compact and the colour clear, but direct sun cannot intensify an inherited pattern.

Watering

Water Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ when the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the centre of the root ball still feels faintly moist. Wet the whole root ball slowly until fresh runoff appears, then empty the saucer or cover pot. A brief surface dry phase is useful, but letting the whole root ball dry can cost fine roots and lower leaves. Constantly damp, dense mix is unsafe because the fine roots need fresh air after each watering. On ‘Polka Dot’, check the centre of the root ball as well as the surface. Tall canes can hide a core that is still damp. Warmth, stronger light and a root-filled pot speed drying. Cool shade and extra pot volume slow it.

Substrate and roots

Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ has fine fibrous roots beneath upright canes. A suitable medium is a moisture-holding but freely draining houseplant mix containing small bark and perlite or pumice. The mix should remain springy. Once it collapses, the centre can stay wet while the edges dry. Choose a close-fitting pot that can support the upright growth without adding a deep layer of unused mix. Use only enough extra pot depth to stabilise ‘Polka Dot’; unused wet mix remains saturated for too long.

Temperature

Keep Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ at 18–27 °C, with 14 °C as a cautious indoor minimum. Cold wet roots are more vulnerable than a dry surface, so move the pot back from icy glass after watering. Direct radiator air browns margins while the centre of the pot may remain wet.

Humidity and airflow

Aim for stable moderate humidity and keep the plant out of persistently damp air. Around 45–60% is workable and 55–70% is useful while new leaves open. Clean, full-sized new leaves on ‘Polka Dot’ indicate that humidity is sufficient. Pair any increased humidity with gentle airflow across the foliage and substrate surface.

Fertilising

Feed Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ with a balanced complete houseplant fertiliser at quarter to half strength every three to five weeks while it is actively making leaves or shoots. A warm plant under useful winter light may remain active and can continue receiving the weaker dose. Apply fertiliser to moist mix, never dry roots, and rinse salt residue through with plain low-mineral water periodically. Extra fertiliser will not strengthen weak canes on ‘Polka Dot’. Useful light must support the growth first.

Repotting

Repot Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ when roots circle the pot or emerge below, water runs through dry channels, the canes become unstable or the mix loses its spring. Choose a container only 2–4 cm wider so unused substrate does not remain wet. Keep as much of the fine root network together as possible and loosen only compressed outer roots. A plant already making a new leaf normally recovers more readily than one resting in cool low light. Restake ‘Polka Dot’ immediately after repotting, but leave each tie loose enough for the cane to thicken.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Keep Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ upright with loose ties on a slim stake, or allow one supported cane to arch. Height can be reduced by cutting above a healthy node during visible growth. Rotate the pot a little after each new leaf has firmed so the crown develops evenly without twisting soft growth. Hold each petiole steady when cleaning a mature leaf of Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’. A soft damp cloth is suitable, but new unfolding leaves should be left untouched. Take out fully brown growth with a basal cut and leave sound leaves in place.

Common problems with Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’

Brown centres on silver polka dots

Normal air-space spotting is firm and stable. A water-soaked centre, yellow margin or lesion that spreads through several dots suggests leaf-spot disease. Isolate, remove affected leaves and avoid splashing the foliage. If a lesion reaches the petiole or cane, cut back to firm, healthy tissue promptly.

Long angel-wing leaves curl at the edges

A dry root ball or hot airflow can curl the broad blades. The same symptom in wet mix points to damaged roots. Feel the mix before watering and inspect the roots if it remains wet. Rehydrate a genuinely dry plant, but restore aeration and remove dead roots when the mix is still wet.

Tall canes lean and become bare

Wide internodes and a lean toward the window indicate stretching. Increase bright filtered light gradually, rotate the pot and prune above a node to activate side buds. Stake loaded canes loosely. A firm bare cane can reshoot; a black or mushy one should be removed.

Red leaf undersides show dark patches

A red-purple reverse is normal. Disease or cold damage changes the texture as well as the colour: affected areas become translucent, soft or collapsed and are visible from the upper surface. Remove spreading tissue and inspect the cane if the petiole is darkening.

New leaves and flowers are streaked

Search for thrips in folded leaves and flower clusters. Their silvery rasps, black specks and distorted growth cut across the regular polka-dot pattern. Isolate the plant, remove badly damaged blooms and repeat a suitable treatment at the label interval.

Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’ and curious cats or dogs

Begonia maculata sold as ‘Polka Dot’, including its elongated olive-green blades, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; the highest concentration occurs in the roots. Collect pruned stems and fallen leaves from below the upright canopy. Block access to the open root ball and every cane cutting during repotting. Choose a position where fallen leaves cannot land within a pet’s reach as the upright stems gain height. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

Why “Polka Dot” is a common name

The word maculata means spotted, which is why the species is widely called polka dot begonia. Giuseppe Raddi published the name in 1820 after collecting work in Brazil.

“Polka Dot” is widely used as a common or marketing name for ordinary Begonia maculata; no reliably distinct cultivar is established under that name. Quotation marks on a shop label do not by themselves establish cultivar status.
