Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’

A Chinese Begonia circulated earlier as U404

Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ entered wider cultivation through material associated with China and was discussed in the Japanese Begonia Society magazine Begonia in 1998. It circulated under the provisional number U404 before being linked with Begonia hemsleyana.

Begonia hemsleyana is native to China, where it grows in shaded, moist forests and valleys at roughly 1,000–1,300 metres. The species has a short stout rhizome, erect aerial stems and palmately compound leaves. U404 has been placed under B. Hemsleyana var. hemsleyana, and plants passed among growers after the 1998 account. Its finely divided leaves and silver spotting belong to the cultivated U404 form, whose precise wild collection locality remains unknown.

How to care for Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’

Light

Place Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. Too much unfiltered light is visible when the upper leaf surface bleaches or scars and the rhizome dries unevenly. In a shaded shelf position, petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. The plant's normal growth carries the silver dots across the palmate foliage. Compact leaves and clear markings indicate suitable light. Stronger exposure increases the risk of scorch.

Watering

Water Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Rewet the entire root ball in one pass, allow full drainage and keep the drainage hole clear. Small sips leave dry pockets behind. A dry surface is acceptable. A fully dry shallow root zone can cost feeder roots and older leaves. Waterlogged substrate around the shallow roots can weaken the living rhizome without an immediate warning from the foliage. Use the moisture around the feeder roots of ‘Silver Dots’. A bare area of a wide pot can give a false dry reading. A warm, well-lit plant in a close-fitting pot needs water sooner than one in cool, weak light.

Substrate and roots

Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ has a thick horizontal rhizome supported by feeder roots near the top of the pot. If using ready-made houseplant mix, adapt it to give the same structure as an airy but moisture-holding blend based on fine bark, peat-free substrate and pumice or perlite. Packed fine compost stays airless beneath the rhizome, while bark used alone dries the small roots too unevenly. Use a shallow, broad drainage pot and keep the top of the rhizome at its present level. Keep the rhizome of ‘Silver Dots’ uncovered and give its growing end open surface space.

Temperature

Keep Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ at 18–26 °C, with 15 °C as a cautious indoor minimum. Keep both foliage and pot away from night-time glass chill and air-conditioning outlets. Keep it outside the direct stream of a radiator, fan heater or strong cooling vent.

Humidity and airflow

Ordinary room air may be enough if new leaves expand normally; 50–70% humidity usually reduces dry edges. Give the broad leaves of ‘Silver Dots’ space to open without resting against damp neighbouring foliage. Fresh air matters most after watering, cleaning or while a new leaf is opening.

Fertilising

Feed Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ with a complete foliage fertiliser at about quarter strength every five to six weeks while it is actively making leaves or shoots. Reduce the dose when light falls, the pot stays wet longer or fresh potting mix already contains fertiliser. Strong feed cannot correct poor light and instead leaves damaging fertiliser salts in the shallow root zone. If the silver-dotted palmate leaves look weak, check light and roots before increasing the fertiliser.

Repotting

Repot Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ when the rhizome reaches the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, water moves unevenly or the substrate has compacted. Choose a pot only 2–3 cm wider. A fine Begonia root system performs best without a large volume of unused substrate. Keep the rooted centre of the rhizome together and remove only loose old mix. A division needs roots and a live bud. Continue feeding only while temperature, light and active growth support normal nutrient use. Set ‘Silver Dots’ so the growing rhizome has room to advance across the fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Allow the rhizome of Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’ to travel across a low pot and leave the petioles unstaked. Divide only after an outer section has made roots and a live bud. Keep the light direction steady while a leaf unfolds, then make any small rotation once it is firm. Hold each petiole steady when cleaning a mature leaf of Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’. A soft damp cloth is suitable, but new unfolding leaves should be left untouched. Snip damaged or spent growth with a clean tool and keep cuts clear of wet substrate.

Problems to watch for with Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’

Translucent halos appear around sparse silver spots

The normal marks are small, widely spaced, dry and sharply contained on the dark leaflets. A glassy halo or expanding brown area is separate damage. Remove a spreading lesion, keep irrigation off the foliage and inspect the shared leaf stalk.

Pale scratches cross the dark leaflets

Thrips feeding can appear as irregular pale rasping accompanied by black specks, especially on new growth. Compare the marks with the plant’s fixed silver dots. Isolate and treat only when repeated fresh damage or insects are found.

Erect aerial stems lean or lose lower leaves

The open upright habit becomes more pronounced as the stems gain height. Support a firm leaning stem loosely or prune above a node to encourage lower growth. Continued leaf loss with a dark or soft base calls for immediate inspection of the basal rhizome and roots.

New compound leaves remain small or distorted

Check folded leaflets and maroon undersides for mites, thrips and mealybugs. If no pest is present, inspect the roots for compaction or decay and review light. Recovery should produce a supple divided leaf that expands fully and retains the sparse spotting.

Pet precautions for Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’

Begonia hemsleyana ‘Silver Dots’, including its characteristic leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; root pieces carry the highest concentration of soluble oxalates. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

From U404 to ‘Silver Dots’

The epithet hemsleyana commemorates British botanist William Botting Hemsley. Joseph Dalton Hooker described the species in 1899 in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine.

The spotted cultivated form circulated earlier under the provisional identification number Begonia U404. ‘Silver Dots’ is the later horticultural name used for its sparse pale spotting; it is not part of the species’ published botanical name.
