Begonia ‘Boomer’

Mabel Corwin’s registered thick-stemmed hybrid

Begonia ‘Boomer’ was raised by Mabel Corwin in California in 1979 and registered by the American Begonia Society in 1987 as cultivar number 919. Its registered parentage is U003 × possibly Begonia vitifolia.

U003 was the plant formerly called Brazil species No. 3 and is now identified as Begonia soli-mutata. The second parent remains uncertain because the registration lists B. Vitifolia only as a possibility. ‘Boomer’ combines the textured foliage associated with U003 with a sturdy, upright thick-stemmed habit.

Growing Begonia ‘Boomer’ indoors

Light

For usable indoor light, stand Begonia ‘Boomer’ close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. Direct sun tolerance is limited: the upper leaf surface bleaches or scars and the rhizome dries unevenly under a strong unacclimated beam. If the room is too dim, petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. Strong healthy leaves display the thick, textured olive surface naturally. Low light weakens the new leaves, while hot sun scorches the surface. More sun is not better once growth is compact and colour is clear.

Watering

Lift the pot and test the mix. Water Begonia ‘Boomer’ after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Pour slowly enough that dry channels rewet, stopping only after water exits freely below. Do not treat the rhizome as a succulent store. Hard dry-outs can leave it alive but without enough feeder roots for the canopy. Continuously wet mix can soften the rhizome where it rests on the surface and starve the roots below of air. Use the moisture around the feeder roots of ‘Boomer’. A bare area of a wide pot can give a false dry reading. Drying depends on light, temperature, airflow, how fully roots fill the pot and the container material.

Substrate and roots

When repotting Begonia ‘Boomer’, take care not to damage a creeping rhizome above a shallow network of fine roots. A practical potting medium is a loose, evenly wetting blend of fine bark, coir or peat-free substrate, and pumice or perlite. As old mix collapses, it holds water under the rhizome and becomes harder to rewet evenly elsewhere in the pot. Follow the horizontal spread with a wide drainage pot. A deep pot simply holds more wet mix below the active roots. Keep the rhizome of ‘Boomer’ uncovered and give its growing end open surface space.

Temperature

Maintain Begonia ‘Boomer’ at about 18–26 °C and avoid sustained exposure below 15 °C. The lower limit assumes active drainage. A saturated pot should be kept warmer. Moderate day-to-night change is useful. Sharp temperature swings are not.

Humidity and airflow

At home, household humidity is workable for many rhizomatous begonias, though 50–70% supports smoother leaf expansion. Give the broad leaves of ‘Boomer’ space to open without resting against damp neighbouring foliage. Use mild continuous air exchange and keep occasional strong blasts away from the foliage.

Fertilising

Use a complete foliage fertiliser at about quarter strength every five to six weeks for Begonia ‘Boomer’ while it is producing new leaves or stems. Do not follow a rigid summer-versus-winter rule. Check how actively the plant is growing and how quickly the substrate dries. Alternate feeding with plain water so fertiliser residue does not build up around delicate feeder roots. If the textured olive foliage look weak, check light and roots before increasing the fertiliser.

Repotting

Do not repot Begonia ‘Boomer’ by the calendar. Wait until the rhizome reaches the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, water moves unevenly or the substrate has compacted. Select the next modest size, generally 2–3 cm wider. Lift the shallow root mass intact. Separate only a rhizome section that already has feeder roots and an active growing point. Choose a warm, well-lit period of active growth, when disturbed roots can recover promptly. Set ‘Boomer’ so the growing rhizome has room to advance across the fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Begonia ‘Boomer’ needs horizontal room across the substrate; staking is unnecessary. Direct the growing end across the pot and divide only a rooted section carrying a healthy textured leaf. Rotation is useful for balance, but wait until soft foliage has expanded before changing its direction. The raised surfaces across the textured olive foliage of Begonia ‘Boomer’ catch dust but should not be pressed or polished. Use a soft brush between the bumps, supporting the blade from beneath. Remove a dead leaf with clean scissors, leaving healthy stem and growing points untouched.

What to check on Begonia ‘Boomer’

One very large leaf hangs lower than the rest

One mature Boomer leaf may hang under its own weight on a firm stalk. If several leaves become limp, feel the mix: water when it is partly dry, and inspect the roots when it remains wet.

Thick stem leans or creases

Sight down the substantial upright stem before the oversized blades pull it farther off centre. A rigid lean can be loosely staked or shortened above a healthy node; a dry crease should be trimmed cleanly. If pressure reveals a wet, dark bend, take the healthy top as a cutting at once.

Quilted blade tears or rubs

Raised texture and a broad surface make the leaf easy to mark against walls, sleeves and neighbouring pots. Give it clearance and keep the container steady. A dry stationary tear is physical and can remain; remove the leaf if the damaged area becomes soft or grey.

A run of much smaller leaves

Check whether the thick-stemmed plant has filled its pot or whether old mix has collapsed around the roots. Move up only slightly when live roots are crowded, or replace compacted material in the same size pot. Resume light feeding after a firm new leaf begins expanding.

‘Boomer’ and pet safety

‘Boomer’, including its roughly puckered leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; root pieces carry the highest concentration of soluble oxalates. Collect pruned stems and fallen leaves from below the upright canopy. Block access to the open root ball and every cane cutting during repotting. Choose a position where fallen leaves cannot land within a pet’s reach as the upright stems gain height. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

Corwin raised the thick-stemmed hybrid in California in 1979. Its parentage is the former Begonia U003, now B. Soli-mutata, crossed with a plant thought to be B. Vitifolia. ‘Boomer’ was registered in 1987.
