Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ is a horticultural cultivar from the diverse rhizomatous Begonia group.

Wild rhizomatous Begonias occur across several tropical regions. Many spread close to the ground among sheltered vegetation, humid air and filtered light, although their rooting surfaces vary from species to species.

Light

Keep Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ close to an east or north-east window, or within about 1 m of a south or west window behind a light curtain. The light is too strong if it heats the leaves and the upper leaf surface bleaches or scars and the rhizome dries unevenly. With too little usable light, petioles stretch, the mound opens and colour or surface texture becomes less clear. Aim for healthy compact growth; stronger light does not create inherited colour. Healthy new leaves naturally develop the warm copper, orange and red colouring. Give enough light for firm growth without using direct sun to force a deeper shade.

Watering

Check Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ below the surface and water after the upper 2–3 cm has dried while the shallow root zone below remains faintly moist. Soak the substrate evenly, let it drain fully and never leave the inner pot standing in water. Waterlogged substrate around the shallow roots can weaken the living rhizome without an immediate warning from the foliage. The rhizome offers only a limited reserve, so prolonged dryness weakens the fine roots that support new leaves. Probe just below the rhizome of ‘Autumn Crinkle’, where the active roots are using water. Recheck the lower mix after a move: brighter light speeds drying, while cooler air or a larger pot slows it.

Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ depends on a surface-running rhizome with fine, shallow feeder roots. Aim for an airy but moisture-holding blend based on fine bark, peat-free substrate and pumice or perlite. The mix must stay springy: dense peat traps water, but an overly coarse orchid mix leaves dry gaps around feeder roots. Follow the horizontal spread with a wide drainage pot. A deep pot simply holds more wet mix below the active roots. Keep the rhizome of ‘Autumn Crinkle’ uncovered and give its growing end open surface space.

Temperature

Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ grows reliably at 18–26 °C. Protect it below about 15 °C. Winter ventilation should not blow across damp roots or soft new leaves. Avoid local heat around one side of the pot, which makes moisture difficult to judge.

Humidity and airflow

For Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’, moderate, stable humidity supports clean leaf expansion without creating persistently wet conditions. Aim around 50–70% if new leaves catch or crisp as they open. Keep the exposed rhizome of ‘Autumn Crinkle’ dry at the surface even when the surrounding air is moderately humid. Keep humid air moving gently so leaf bases and stem tissue can dry.

Fertilising

Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ needs a new pot once the rhizome reaches the rim, roots fill the shallow pot, water moves unevenly or the substrate has compacted. A pot 2–3 cm wider is normally enough for the next stage of growth. Support the root mass while moving the plant and keep pressure off the petioles. Any division must retain both roots and a healthy bud. Work while the plant is actively growing in stable warmth so new roots can resume quickly. Set the thick rhizome on the surface. Burying it to steady the plant creates a wet collar around living tissue.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Do not stake the petioles of Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’. Guide its surface rhizome across the mix so new leaves have room to form, and divide only a rooted section with a live bud. Turn the pot gradually over several weeks so fresh growth can adjust without twisting. Handle Begonia ‘Autumn Crinkle’ by the pot or a sturdy petiole base. Folded or ruffled leaf edges tear easily. Use a soft brush on dry foliage; pressure from a cloth can flatten the textured surface. Cut fully spent leaves or flower stems cleanly at the base. Tearing can injure the crown.

The raised margins can dry first after an unevenly dry root ball, hot airflow or an abrupt humidity change. Rehydrate only when the mix is genuinely dry. A pale papery patch confined to the window-facing ridges is usually scorch.

Warm leaf colours change as the foliage matures

Copper, orange, burgundy and chocolate can deepen or shift in balance as each crinkled leaf hardens. An even colour change across a firm leaf is normal. Check the roots and light if leaves bleach, develop papery patches, hang on weak petioles or become progressively smaller.

Creeping rhizome reaches the pot rim

A firm rhizome can extend sideways and carry the warm crinkled foliage off-centre. Set the growing end onto fresh mix in a wider shallow pot, or divide an established outer section once it has roots. Keep the rhizome at the surface.

Several petioles loosen from the centre

One ageing leaf may detach cleanly. Several petioles releasing from a dark, soft or sour-smelling section indicate decay. Remove wet mix, cut back to firm tissue and save a healthy leaf or rooted outer rhizome section.

Is ‘Autumn Crinkle’ safe around pets?

‘Autumn Crinkle’, including its deeply crinkled leaves, contains soluble calcium oxalates and is toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that chews the leaves or a stem may drool or vomit; roots and other buried tissues contain the greatest concentration. Division can leave small rhizome and root fragments on the work surface. Count and discard every rhizome and root piece before pets return to the area. Keep pets outside the work area until the divided plant, used substrate and tools have been cleared. If drooling, vomiting or swallowing follows contact with the leaves or a stem, contact a veterinarian. Bag discarded roots, spent substrate and cuttings after repotting, then wash hands.

The genus Begonia commemorates Michel Bégon. Charles Plumier created the name in the late seventeenth century, and Linnaeus adopted it in 1753.
