Begonia amphioxus

A limestone Begonia from Sabah

Begonia amphioxus is endemic to Sabah in northern Borneo, where it is associated with tropical forest over limestone.

Wild plants grow in sheltered, lightly shaded places around limestone outcrops and cliff bases, rooting through moss, leaf litter and thin organic deposits. The setting is warm and humid, while the shallow root zone remains porous and exposed to air.

Watering

Fertilising

Feed Begonia amphioxus sparingly with a complete foliage or orchid fertiliser while new leaves or shoots are forming. Its small root system is easily overfed, so remain at the low end of the stated concentration even when several shoots are growing.

Repotting

Move Begonia amphioxus into fresh substrate when fine roots occupy the shallow pot, the growing point reaches the rim, moisture becomes uneven or the substrate packs down. Choose the next pot to fit the roots of the plant; unused substrate stays wet in an oversized container.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Begonia amphioxus does not need a stake. Wait until an ageing leaf is fully yellow, then cut it at the base.

If Begonia amphioxus looks unwell

Lance-shaped leaves curl or become crisp

The narrow blades have little reserve when the root ball dries or the plant moves abruptly from a humid enclosure to drier air. Check the mix: rehydrate a light, partly dry pot and stabilise humidity with a humidifier or enclosure that still has air exchange. If the pot is wet, inspect the fine roots because adding water to damaged roots will accelerate decline.

Red spots that spread or turn brown

The red spotting and red leaf margin are normal when they remain sharply defined and the tissue is firm. A translucent, soft or yellow-rimmed mark that keeps enlarging is damaged tissue. Isolate the plant, keep the leaves dry and remove spreading lesions. Stem softening with the spots requires faster action because infection may have moved beyond the leaf.

Thin upright stems collapse at the mix

A stem that bends cleanly after handling may be physically damaged, but a dark, water-soaked or mushy base is consistent with active rot. Unpot immediately, remove soft roots and stems, and root firm upper sections in a clean airy medium. Avoid burying the replacement stems deeply; the crown needs moisture around the roots without constant saturation.

Shortened or twisted new spear-like leaves

Compare the next narrow blade with the plant’s established red-spotted spears. One tip may snag among the thin stems during opening, but a run of shortened blades means the growing point is being interrupted. Check the growing point for rubbing or feeding signs, then make sure the small root system has stayed airy and evenly moist.

Growth stops and lower leaves yellow

Check the small root system before adding fertiliser. A dense or continually wet medium can lose air and leave the plant unable to take up water or nutrients. Remove compacted material, trim dead roots and use a suitably small pot. Feed lightly only after healthy new roots or leaves appear.

Begonia amphioxus is toxic to people and pets

• The roots and rhizomes contain the highest levels of soluble oxalates, and the sap can irritate skin.

Begonia amphioxus: name and meaning

Begonia honours Michel Bégon. The name amphioxus combines Greek amphi, on both sides, with oxys, sharp or pointed.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Begonia in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1056.

Martin Jonathan Southgate Sands first described Begonia amphioxus in 1990 in Kew Mag, volume 7, page 81.
