Aristolochia leuconeura

Natural range and habitat of Aristolochia leuconeura

Aristolochia leuconeura occurs naturally from Veracruz in Mexico through Central America to southern tropical America and grows primarily in wet tropical habitat.

How to care for Aristolochia leuconeura

Light and climate: Choose a sheltered position with bright filtered light. Keep temperatures around 18–26 °C and above 15 °C. Keep humidity around 60–80% and allow gentle air movement around the foliage.

Water and potting mix: Use an organic-rich mix that stays lightly moist while draining freely. Water when the surface begins to dry and let excess water escape through the drainage holes.

Feeding: Feed during active growth with a balanced fertiliser containing micronutrients at half strength.

Support and pruning: Provide a sturdy trellis or frame from the start, and guide the young stems onto it as they grow. Long stems can be shortened just above a leaf joint when they outgrow the available support.

Repotting: Repot when roots have filled the container or the mix begins drying much faster than usual.

Problems and solutions for Aristolochia leuconeura

• Wilting while the potting mix is wet: the roots may have been damaged by staying wet for too long. Let the pot drain and inspect the roots. Cut soft brown sections back to healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the rotten material, then repot in fresh, well-drained mix.
• Small, pale new leaves with long spaces between them: the vine probably needs more light. Move it gradually into brighter filtered light and keep the new stems trained onto their support.
• Fine pale speckling or webbing beneath the leaves: spider mites may be feeding there. Keep the vine apart from other plants, rinse the leaf undersides thoroughly and inspect them again after a few days. Use a labelled mite treatment if mites remain. Repeat it only as directed on the label.

Aristolochia leuconeura is toxic to people and pets

• Keep every part of this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• It contains aristolochic acids, which can cause serious poisoning and kidney damage.
• Treat any ingestion as urgent and contact a veterinarian or medical professional immediately.

The meaning and history of Aristolochia leuconeura

Aristolochia combines Greek aristos, meaning best, with locheia, meaning childbirth. Leuconeura combines Greek leukos, white, with neuron, nerve or vein.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Aristolochia in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 960.

Jean Jules Linden first described Aristolochia leuconeura in 1858 in La Belgique Horticole, volume 8, page 165.
