The Dutch breeding origin of Aphelandra squarrosa ‘White Wash’

Obed Jacob Smit bred Aphelandra squarrosa ‘White Wash’ in Sappemeer, the Netherlands, from an unnamed Aphelandra squarrosa seed parent × ‘Snow White’ in 2011 and selected it the following year.

Wild Aphelandra squarrosa grows in the humid understorey of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

Light, moisture and root care

Light

Aphelandra squarrosa ‘White Wash’ needs a bright home position with a broad view of the sky. Adequate filtered light supports compact growth; protect the pale leaf tissue from hot direct sun.

Watering

Keep Aphelandra squarrosa ‘White Wash’ evenly moist rather than alternating between drought and saturation. When the surface feels just dry, water thoroughly and empty the cover pot.

Substrate and roots

Aphelandra squarrosa ‘White Wash’ grows best in a fine-textured but springy substrate of quality potting mix, small bark and mineral aeration. It should retain light moisture around the fine roots and drain without forming a muddy core.

Temperature

Keep Aphelandra squarrosa ‘White Wash’ in steady indoor warmth and away from chilling temperatures. A brief mild drop is less harmful than several cool days in saturated substrate.

Humidity and airflow

Moderate to high humidity helps the pale new leaves open cleanly. Spraying is not required and often leaves spots across the pale wash.

Very pale foliage without losing plant health

• A leaf is heavily washed with white around its veins: Extensive white patterning is normal for ‘White Wash’, and individual leaves may differ. Healthy pale tissue is firm; a deficiency would not usually create this stable vein-related pattern.
• Pale sections become crisp or bleached beige: Direct sun, hot glass or a severe dry spell has damaged sensitive tissue. Give bright filtered light and more even root moisture; old marks remain, so assess the next leaf.
• The newest growth is small and almost colourless: Very pale tissue has limited green area, so the plant still needs good indirect light. Check roots and growing conditions, but do not place it in direct sun in an attempt to add green.
• Several leaves fall after the pot dries: Aphelandra may shed foliage after a sharp water shortage. Rehydrate evenly and stabilise conditions; avoid keeping the mix permanently wet to prevent a repeat.
• The yellow flower spike fades or never appears indoors: A finished bract will naturally brown, and flowering can be sporadic indoors. Remove a spent spike, maintain healthy foliage and avoid heavy feeding purely to force another bloom.

Where does the name Aphelandra squarrosa come from?

Aphelandra combines Greek apheles, meaning simple, with aner or andros, meaning man, a botanical reference to its simple one-celled anthers. The epithet squarrosa means rough or spreading and refers to the projecting bracts around the flower spike.
