Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Curly White’

Origin of Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Curly White’

Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Curly White’ is a cultivated foliage selection of Aphelandra squarrosa. The species is native to northeastern and southeastern Brazil.

How to care for Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Curly White’

Light and climate: Give ‘Curly White’ bright indirect light. Keep temperatures around 18–24 °C and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C. Aim for a humid 60–80% range, paired with gentle circulation around the foliage.

Position: Choose a warm, sheltered spot away from cold glass, strong draughts and hot, dry air. A room humidifier can help where indoor air is consistently dry.

‘Curly White’ responds quickly when either its roots or the surrounding air become too dry. Keep the root ball lightly and evenly moist in a houseplant mix that holds moisture but still drains freely, using a pot with drainage holes. Water when the surface first begins to dry and let excess water drain away.

Feeding: Feed every few weeks during active growth with houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

Repotting: Repot when roots have densely filled the container.

Pruning: Shorten a stem that has outgrown its space just above a leaf joint, using clean, sharp pruners to encourage branching.

Troubleshooting Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Curly White’

• Drooping or leaf drop while the mix is dry: the root ball has probably become too dry. Water thoroughly and keep moisture more even as the plant recovers.
• Drooping while the mix is still wet: the roots may be staying too wet or beginning to rot. Let the pot drain and inspect the roots. Cut soft brown roots back to healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the rotten material and repot in fresh, freely draining mix.
• Brown, crisp tips while the mix is evenly moist: dry air is a likely cause. Raise humidity around the plant and move it away from hot, dry air.
• Cottony white insects around the leaf joints: mealybugs may be present. Move the plant away from other houseplants, remove visible insects from the joints and use a treatment labelled for mealybugs on ornamental houseplants if they return. Repeat it only as directed on the label.
• Tiny pale speckles with fine webbing: spider mites are likely feeding beneath the leaves. Rinse the upper and lower leaf surfaces, keep the plant separate and inspect the undersides again after a few days. Use a labelled mite treatment if the infestation continues. Repeat it only as directed on the label.

Aphelandra squarrosa ‘Curly White’ is non-toxic to cats and dogs

• This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs.
• Its effects on people are unclear, so keep it away from young children who may chew it.
• Eating a large amount can still cause an upset stomach. Seek medical or veterinary advice if symptoms continue.

Aphelandra squarrosa: where the name comes from

Aphelandra combines Greek apheles, meaning simple, with aner or andros, meaning man, a botanical reference to its simple one-celled anthers. The epithet squarrosa means rough or spreading and refers to the projecting bracts around the flower spike.

Robert Brown established the genus Aphelandra in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 475.

Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck first described Aphelandra squarrosa in 1847 in Flora Brasiliensis, volume 9, page 89.
