Anthurium regale × luxurians

Parentage of Anthurium regale × luxurians

Anthurium regale × A. luxurians is a cultivated cross between Anthurium regale from north-eastern Peru and Anthurium luxurians from Colombia. Both parent species come from wet tropical forest, and the hybrid varies naturally from plant to plant.

Care for Anthurium regale × luxurians

• Pot and stability: Use a stable pot matched closely to the roots because the broad leaves can unbalance a light container.
• New-leaf maturation: Let each new leaf harden fully before handling or cleaning the blade.
• Light: Give the whole crown bright indirect light and increase exposure gradually after a move from shade.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm conditions around 20–28 °C and high humidity suit the heavy quilted foliage; keep light air movement around the leaves and avoid cold draughts. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C.
• Water and potting mix: Use an open, moisture-retentive mix that releases excess water promptly. Water as the upper part approaches dryness while slight moisture remains deeper in the root zone, then wet the mix evenly and let it drain fully.
• Repotting: Inspect the root ball when roots or new shoots crowd the pot, the mix has broken down or the plant has become unstable. Refresh degraded mix separately; move to a slightly wider pot only when the roots or basal growth need more room.
• Feeding: Feed at a light rate while fresh leaves and roots develop. Reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Propagation: Separate a rooted basal division, or root a firm rhizome section that carries an active growing point.

When Anthurium regale × A. luxurians changes

• A new leaf opens unevenly: Uneven expansion can follow a shift in root moisture or contact with a nearby surface. Keep the next growth cycle even and unobstructed.
• Mature foliage becomes progressively smaller: Weak light, interrupted root growth or a recent stress period can reduce later leaf size. If the site is dim, acclimatise the plant to a brighter indirect position. Where light is already adequate, stabilise watering and the root zone and wait for active growth to return before increasing fertiliser.
• The raised surface is less pronounced than expected: Young leaves and individual plants vary. Compare several mature leaves; no corrective treatment is needed when the foliage is otherwise firm and healthy.

Anthurium regale × luxurians is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
