Anthurium luxurians

A terrestrial plant from Colombia’s wet western forests

Anthurium luxurians is endemic to Colombia and grows on the shaded floor of very wet tropical forest, particularly in the Chocó region. It is terrestrial, rooting in moist, nutrient-rich organic material beneath dense canopy. Rainfall and humidity are high, but the forest litter and surface layer remain structurally open rather than permanently waterlogged.

Care for Anthurium luxurians

• Light: Give medium to bright filtered light. Strong midday sun can mark the raised leaf surface and overheat the root zone.
• Watering: Keep moisture even, watering when the top 1–2 cm begins to dry. Drain fully while a new textured leaf is opening.
• Humidity and airflow: Aim for 70–85% relative humidity with gentle airflow over the recessed veins and crown.
• Temperature: Maintain 21–28 °C with nights above 19 °C. Stable warmth supports clean expansion of thick, bullate leaves.
• Substrate and repotting: For the first growth cycle, leave Anthurium luxurians at its current planting depth and monitor how the moist but aerated terrestrial root zone responds between thorough waterings; repot once the root system is active and handling stress is lower. Repot later into a snug pot with fine bark, coir, coco chips and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Use a weak complete fertiliser during root and leaf growth. Flush with plain water every 4–6 weeks to protect the fine active roots from salts.
• Pebbled leaf care and propagation: Clean the deeply pebbled surface with a gentle rinse and dry the depressions promptly. Use a close-fitting pot for its short stem and propagate from rooted basal growth or node-bearing stem sections.

Yellow leaves, root stress and water in hollows

• Flexible leaves and yellowing: Low pot weight with a dry upper root zone and flexible leaf indicates thirst; rehydrate the mix thoroughly and empty the outer pot. Persistent weight in the pot with damp mix, yellow soft growth or a sour smell indicates root failure; pause the watering cycle and examine the roots and exposed stem.
• Root aeration and damaged sections: Preserve every firm root attached to a solid stem; texture decides what stays. Trim only slippery, hollow or blackened roots with a freshly sterilised blade, then use a snug aerated pot and keep the short stem at the surface. Before cutting Anthurium luxurians, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.
• Dry edging around the blade: Crisp margins can reflect a missed watering or salts concentrated during drying. Check pot weight, restore an even watering rhythm and flush with low-mineral water; browning that continues in wet mix calls for closer root inspection.
• Dark patches after rubbing or splash: A fixed surface mark may begin with water trapped in a recess; dry the full surface after rinsing. Leave no standing water between the raised veins. A soft lesion that changes size from day to day is urgent; keep the blade dry and photograph its edge.
• A paused leaf cycle: When moisture is steady, check light and root temperature next; fix the light, temperature or root problem you found before feeding again. Use filtered light and nights above 19 °C; look for a fresh root or movement at the crown.
• Fine feeding marks and pest residue: Go over an uneven opening leaf for thrips feeding; mites create finer pale dots between the raised veins. Look closely at recesses, undersides and the central growth point with magnification. Isolate, rinse hardened foliage, treat with a product approved for that pest, make each repeat application on the label schedule and review treated hiding places every seven days for four weeks.
• Water and mites in leaf hollows: The deep surface traps dust, water and mites. Rinse hardened leaves and dry every hollow; keep the short stem in a close-fitting pot and use a wider pot only if the observed stem begins advancing.

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium luxurians

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Luxurians is Latin for “luxuriant” or “growing abundantly”. Thomas B. Croat and R. N. Cirino described Anthurium luxurians in 2005 in Aroideana 28: 56.
