Anthurium luxurians is endemic to Colombia, where it grows terrestrially as a subshrub in the wet tropical biome. The species was published in 2005.

• New-leaf conditions: Keep warmth, root moisture and humidity steady while a blade is expanding. Do not touch the soft surface or allow it to press against another object.
• Light: Medium to bright filtered light suits the dark, raised foliage. Protect the leaves from strong direct sun, which can scorch the surface.
• Water: Maintain an even cycle, watering when the upper layer begins to dry and draining the pot fully. Avoid letting a short-stemmed plant remain wet in an oversized container.
• Leaf cleaning: Rinse only hardened foliage when necessary and dry water from the deep hollows. Dust and pests can remain hidden between the raised sections.
• Repotting: Keep the short stem at the surface and use a snug, aerated mix. Divide a rooted basal growth only when the plant has a separate viable growth point.

Root, crown and leaf problems in Anthurium luxurians

• A new leaf opens torn or misshapen: Root stress, contact or an abrupt humidity change may have interrupted expansion. Leave firm tissue intact, stabilise conditions and protect the next leaf while it opens.
• Brown edges continue around the raised blade: Check for a missed deep watering and fertiliser salts. Rehydrate dry mix fully or flush residue with low-mineral water; if browning continues while the pot stays wet, inspect the roots for decay or poor aeration. Remove only soft, hollow or slippery roots, retain all firm roots and repot them in fresh, airy mix when the old root zone has broken down.
• Dark wet patches spread through the hollows: Move the plant to a separate spot, stop wetting the leaf surface and improve airflow. If the lesion continues toward the crown, remove the affected leaf with a clean blade that has been disinfected before the cut.
• The plant wilts although the pot stays heavy: Unpot it and check for oxygen-starved or decayed roots. Retain firm roots, remove slippery or hollow sections and repot into a snug ventilated container with fresh mix.
• Fine pale feeding marks collect between ridges: Fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites, while silvery scars with black specks indicate thrips. Inspect the recesses and new growth for these signs. If you confirm spider mites or thrips, keep the plant apart from nearby foliage and rinse or wipe both surfaces of hardened leaves, working along the ridges and recesses. Apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to the leaf depressions, leaf undersides and newest growth. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course, rechecking the leaf depressions and newest growth each time.

Anthurium luxurians: where the name comes from

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. The epithet luxurians is Latin for luxuriant or abundant.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.
