Anthurium luxurians

Botanical identity and natural origin of Anthurium luxurians

Anthurium luxurians is endemic to Colombia, where it grows terrestrially as a subshrub in the wet tropical biome.

Care for Anthurium luxurians

• New-leaf conditions: Keep temperatures around 20–28 °C and humidity around 60–80%, with gentle airflow while a leaf is expanding. Give the soft new leaf clear space until it hardens.
• Leaf cleaning: Dust can remain hidden between the raised sections. Rinse only hardened foliage when necessary and dry water from the deep hollows.
• Light: Medium to bright filtered light suits the dark, raised foliage. Protect the leaves from strong direct sun, which can scorch the surface.
• Temperature: About 18–30 °C suits established growth. Protect the plant from cold draughts, prolonged temperatures below 15 °C and temperatures around 10 °C or lower.
• Water: Maintain an even cycle, watering when the upper layer begins to dry and draining the pot fully. Avoid letting a short-stemmed plant remain wet in an oversized container.
• Support: Choose a stable container; stake later only if the plant becomes heavy enough to lean.
• Repotting: Keep the short stem at the surface. Use an airy mix in a pot that fits the root ball. Repot when roots fill the current container; if the mix loses structure first, refresh it without automatically increasing pot size. Divide a rooted basal growth only when it has its own healthy growing point.
• Feeding: Feed lightly during active leaf and root development. Reduce feeding as growth slows.

Root, crown and leaf problems in Anthurium luxurians

• A new leaf opens torn or misshapen: Root stress, contact or an abrupt humidity change may have interrupted expansion. Leave firm tissue intact, stabilise conditions and protect the next leaf while it opens.
• Brown edges continue around the raised blade: Check for a missed deep watering and fertiliser salts. Rehydrate dry mix fully or flush residue with low-mineral water; if browning continues while the pot stays wet, inspect the roots for decay or poor aeration. Remove only soft, hollow or slippery roots, retain all firm roots and repot them in fresh, airy mix when the old root zone has broken down.
• Dark wet patches spread through the hollows: Move the plant to a separate spot, stop wetting the leaf surface and improve airflow. If the lesion continues toward the crown, remove the affected leaf with a clean blade that has been disinfected before the cut.
• The plant wilts although the pot stays heavy: Unpot it and check for oxygen-starved or decayed roots. Retain firm roots, remove slippery or hollow sections and repot into a snug ventilated container with fresh mix.
• Fine pale feeding marks collect between ridges: Fine pale stippling with webbing indicates spider mites, while silvery scars with black specks indicate thrips. Inspect the recesses and new growth for these signs. If you confirm spider mites or thrips, keep the plant apart from nearby foliage and rinse or wipe both surfaces of hardened leaves, working along the ridges and recesses. Apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to the leaf depressions, leaf undersides and newest growth. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course, rechecking the leaf depressions and newest growth each time.

Anthurium luxurians is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Anthurium luxurians: where the name comes from

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. The epithet luxurians is Latin for luxuriant or abundant.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Anthurium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Thomas Bernard Croat and Richard N. Cirino first described Anthurium luxurians in 2005 in Aroideana, volume 28, page 56.
