Anthurium crystallinum ‘Crystal Hope’

Bred in Cartago, Costa Rica

‘Crystal Hope’ was produced in Cartago, Costa Rica, by crossing two selected Anthurium crystallinum breeding lines, LV-36 and LV-40. The seedling first carried the code 30-8 and was later propagated by division and tissue culture; its US plant patent was granted in 1995. The species behind it inhabits wet tropical forest from Panama to Colombia, usually as an epiphyte.

Care for Anthurium crystallinum ‘Crystal Hope’

• Light: Provide bright, diffuse light and screen strong midday sun. Rotate the pot gradually so the broad leaves receive even light without abrupt exposure changes.
• Watering: Water when the surface starts to dry while moisture remains lower in the pot. Saturate the mix evenly and empty any water held in the outer pot.
• Humidity and airflow: Keep relative humidity around 65–80% and provide mild air circulation around emerging leaves. Let wet foliage dry quickly.
• Temperature: An intermediate range of 18–27 °C suits this plant, with nights preferably above 18 °C. Avoid prolonged heat above 29 °C.
• Substrate and repotting: Before changing the substrate around Anthurium crystallinum ‘Crystal Hope’, learn the nursery pot’s wet and dry weights and confirm active growth through the airy epiphytic root zone; that evidence gives a safer repotting point than a fixed calendar date. Afterwards, use a slightly larger pot with fine bark, coco coir, chopped coco husk and pumice or perlite.
• Feeding: Apply a dilute complete fertiliser whenever roots and leaves are growing. • Root damage below the surface: Healthy root tissue feels solid under light pressure; root colour varies, so firmness is the useful test. Take out dead root tissue and leave every firm section intact; match the remaining roots with a snug ventilated pot and fine airy mix. Before cutting Anthurium crystallinum ‘Crystal Hope’, photograph the root system and confirm failure by texture; preserve every firm section, sterilise the tool between cuts and keep the crown stable while new roots develop.

• Pests concealed around the crown: Fine silver streaks on the newest leaf commonly indicate thrips; mites leave a much finer dull stippling on mature foliage. Inspect the newest sheath as well as the mature leaf underside; tiny larvae and black specks can hide there. Keep the plant away from the collection while treating hidden growth and the complete leaf surface. Let the product label set the repeat interval and look for fresh feeding marks weekly until four clean checks have passed.
• Creased new leaves: A compact new leaf can crease when root moisture or humidity changes during opening. Leave it untouched, stabilise conditions and use the next leaf to judge improvement.

Anthurium crystallinum ‘Crystal Hope’: safety around pets

• Not pet-safe. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause immediate pain and irritation if chewed.

The name Anthurium crystallinum ‘Crystal Hope’

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 828.

Crystallinum is Latin for “crystalline”, referring to the glinting pale venation. Jean Jules Linden and Édouard André described Anthurium crystallinum in 1873 in Catalogue Général 90, plate 128.

‘Crystal Hope’ echoes the crystalline sheen and thick iridescent venation inherited from Anthurium crystallinum. The cultivar name belongs to the compact Costa Rican selection patented in 1995.
