Anthurium bonplandii Variegata

A variegated selection of a variable South American species

The variegated form’s nursery origin is not publicly documented. Anthurium bonplandii ranges across the Guiana Shield and parts of northern Amazonia, growing on the ground, on rocks and occasionally on trees. Depending on the subspecies, it occupies warm tropical landscapes where its bird’s-nest rosette collects fallen organic material around the roots.

Growing Anthurium indoors

• Substrate and repotting: Acclimate Anthurium bonplandii Variegata with the nursery root ball intact long enough to understand its moisture use and the condition of the rosette crown and outer roots; choose the later repotting moment from new roots and steady leaf expansion. Later, use a stable close-fitting pot with coarse bark, coco chips, pumice and a modest amount of coir.
• Light: Give medium to bright filtered light, including gentle early or late sun after acclimation. Keep the rosette away from hot midday glass.
• Humidity and airflow: A range of moderate to high humidity suits this robust rosette when air circulates between the leaves.
• Temperature: Keep at steady warmth and away from chilling temperatures at night. These seasonally drier habitat types handle warmth when roots remain aerated.
• Feeding: Use a dilute complete fertiliser while leaves and roots are growing. If Anthurium bonplandii Variegata keeps producing roots or leaves under lower light, continue feeding lightly; reduce or pause when growth stops, and rinse the mix with plain water occasionally.

• Yellow leaves with changing pot weight: Let the upper 3–4 cm dry before watering. Folding leaves with a light pot and dry deeper mix need a full soak; soft yellowing while the pot stays heavy points to wet roots. Pale areas can wilt or scorch before the greener tissue shows stress.

• When a leaf spot keeps expanding: Dry bleached areas point to sun, while soft marks at leaf bases may start with trapped crown water. Isolate spreading or yellow-edged lesions, keep the crown dry and mark the edge and check if it expands.

• Leaves and stems contain needle-like, insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Who first published Anthurium bonplandii, and what does the name mean?

The genus name Anthurium combines Greek anthos, “flower”, and oura, “tail”, referring to the tail-like spadix. Bonplandii honours the French botanist and explorer Aimé Bonpland.
