Older plants develop broad spade-shaped leaves with deep basal lobes and a heavy, substantial texture. Mature specimens can reach about 100 cm high and 90 cm wide, with each later leaf becoming larger, darker and more sharply shaped than the juvenile growth.
Young leaves open burgundy or dark bronze, then deepen to near-black green as they harden. Their velvet surface carries a metallic sheen and pale branching veins that become clearer on mature foliage.
