Airflow & Drainage Substrate Set – structure ingredients for dense houseplant soil

Airflow & Drainage Substrate Set is a practical correction set for soil that needs more air movement and less compaction. The materials keep their roles separate: perlite lightens, bark opens the organic fraction and lava rock keeps the blend physically stable.

What to expect

Perlite: brings light pore space through fine soil
Pine bark: creates coarse organic gaps around thicker roots
Lava Rock Granules: supply durable mineral texture and useful pot weight
Mix-through use: works inside the substrate, not below it

Mixing guide

A useful starting point is two parts perlite, two parts pine bark and one part Lava Rock Granules, then one part of that structure blend to three or four parts existing potting mix. Increase slowly for large pots or thick-rooted plants.

Where it fits best

A coarse layer at the base does not repair a dense soil sitting above it. The useful change happens when the ingredients sit throughout the root zone and change how water and air move after every watering.

Using it day to day

This set is meant to make mixing easier. Use it as a full recipe or as a starting point you can adjust with extra mineral or organic components.

If you repot multiple plants, mix small batches first so you can tune the texture and drying rate to each pot and root system.

Extra notes

Pre-moisten dry components for a more even blend.
Keep leftovers sealed and dry between uses.
Match chunk size to pot size: smaller pots need finer structure.

Blend the structure ingredients first, then mix them through existing potting mix. Measure by volume and start modestly; even a small amount can change how a soil behaves.

Structure blend: 2 parts perlite, 2 parts pine bark and 1 part Lava Rock Granules.
How much to add: Use roughly 1 part structure blend to 3–4 parts existing potting mix.
Use less: Choose the lighter amount for fine roots, small pots or mixes that only need gentle loosening.
Use more: Increase the structure blend when potting soil settles into a dense mass after watering, stays wet for too long or feels tight around thicker roots.

Do not use this as a bottom drainage layer. A dense mix above a coarse layer still stays dense; the useful change happens when bark, perlite and lava rock sit throughout the root zone.
