Soil Checker – Simple Tool to Stop Guessing Your Watering
The Soil Checker is a straightforward analogue tool that shows you what is happening deep inside the pot. Instead of guessing from the top layer, you pull up a core of substrate and see – and feel – how moist it really is at root level.
Use it to avoid both overwatering and underwatering, reduce the risk of root rot, and understand how fast different mixes dry out in your home. One quick check before watering is often enough to prevent most moisture-related problems.
How to use it
- Reaches all the way to the bottom of the pot so you see the full moisture profile.
- Helps prevent soggy lower layers that stay wet long after the surface looks dry.
- Gently loosens compacted soil each time you use it, improving aeration.
- Keeps your hands clean – no more digging fingers into pots.
If you struggle with watering, the Soil Checker quickly becomes a favourite tool – especially for larger pots or heavy, moisture-retentive mixes.
Reading the core sample
- Depth check: Look at the sample from the bottom of the pot, not just the surface layer.
- Multiple spots: Test in a few areas—edges can dry faster than the centre.
- Act on it: If the core is dry, water deeply; if it is cool and damp, wait.
Care for the wooden tool
- Clean: Tap out substrate, then wipe the tool clean after use.
- No soaking: A quick wipe is enough; let the wood dry fully.
- Storage: Store dry so the finish stays smooth and the tool stays accurate.
